Approved Mental Health Professional Team Manager

This is an exciting opportunity for experienced and practising approved mental health professionals (AMHPs) to directly lead and innovate in the delivery of a safe, effective, and well led AMHP Service that is responsive and effective. Reporting to the specialist service manager you will be responsible for providing management and senior leadership to the AMHP team Mon to Fri on a shift basis. There will be regularly early evening working and occasional out of hours working.

The Central AMHP team operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and during public holidays and is based at the SHSC Crisis Hub, Longley Centre, Sheffield S5 7JT.

The team is commissioned to carry out statutory assessments under the Mental Health Act, (1983 MHA) for consideration of compulsory admission to hospital. This is a systemic job which routinely requires team managers to able to develop, liaise and build upon already established good working relationships with all partner agencies such as Sheffield Health and Social Care (SHSC), Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and South Yorkshire Police. The service is constantly evolving to meet and keep up with its challenging role.

Your core duties will be the day-to-day coordination, prioritisation, and allocation of the AMHP workload. Being a visible point of contact for the AMHP service, dealing with more complex MHA referrals and representing the team at meetings and forums.

You will also be responsible to offer advice and consultation to multidisciplinary colleagues and other stakeholders regarding the use of relevant legislation notably the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and its interface with the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Care Act 2014, Human Rights Act 1998 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Case law and relevant codes of practice.

You will need to be a Registered Social Worker, Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Psychologist and have at least 3 years' significant experience of AMHP work, demonstrating a comprehensive and up to date understanding of all relevant legislation, regulations and guidance with post qualifying experience of working as an AMHP. The ability to lead decisively is essential. The successful applicants will be delivering supervision to team members.

You will be required to work closely with team members, service users, carers and other relevant stakeholders to lead from the front and support the service manager with development and transformation of the Central AMHP Team. This will include reinforcing the values and expectations of Sheffield City Council through collaborative and dynamic engagement with service users and carers that is both supportive and encouraging in nature.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
