The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Senior Clinical Fellow in General and Benign Colorectal Surgery with a special interest in Anal Neoplasia.

The post holder will be attached to the Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service and will also be part of the general surgery on call rota.

The post holder will support the Colorectal team as required, however this will be on a limited basis, and therefore this post is not recommended for anyone looking for extensive training in major Colorectal procedures.

There is opportunity for the post holder to get involved in teaching and training, audit and quality improvement work. Interested applicants will also have opportunity to gain experience in high resolution anoscopy (HRA).

The post is offered on a full-time basis, and includes a 1 in 10 on call commitment, including night shifts, with commensurate banding.

The post-holders will be expected to ensure the appropriate and safe management of HANS patients and to provide cover for general surgery emergencies; up to one general /colorectal surgery clinic (ad hoc) per week may be timetabled in addition to the HANS commitments.

A shared office space, including computer and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.

The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital. Research activity will be encouraged.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the service within the directorate.

The appointee will be expected to take part in the management and routine administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

The Departments of Bariatrics and General Surgery are supported by 4 FY1, 5 CT/Trust SHO, 8 ST3+/Trust Registrar, 1 post-CCT Fellow, and 4 Specialty/Specialist Doctors.

The HANS service is supported by 4 Specialty/Specialist doctors and 2 nurse specialists.

The Department is busy with both emergency and elective work. There is a strong bias towards Day Surgery, with over 80% of patients being treated as day stay cases. There is a dedicated Day Stay Unit comprising three Day Surgery Theatres and the Endoscopy Unit (3 suites). The Main Theatre block of 6 theatres includes a fully equipped OR1 laparoscopic theatre.

Laparoscopic surgery is a particular interest within the Department. The trust invests in high quality laparoscopic equipment to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.

The HANS service is the biggest service provider for the diagnosis and treatment of anal neoplasia in the UK and offers clinic-based high resolution anoscopy (HRA) based diagnosis and treatment, runs research studies and has regular lists in day stay and main theatre for GA cases.

The Trust currently has one of the largest regional bariatric units which takes referrals from across the South East. The colorectal service includes cancer work, IBD and complex fistula, anal neoplasia and pelvic floor dysfunction.

The post holder must at all times carry out responsibilities and duties in accordance with the

Trust's Equal Opportunities Policies and single equalities framework.

Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed upon them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees.

The post holder must maintain confidentiality of information about patients, staff, visitors and other health service employees in accordance with Data Protection Act 1998.

All employees have a responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in the course of their duties and for ensuring that they are aware of the specific duties relating to their role.

All employees of the Trust are required to observe legislation, Trust policies, standards and guidelines relating to Health and Safety, Infection Control, Hygiene Code, Risk Management, Equal Opportunities, Confidentiality, Data Protection, Freedom of Information and the Trust Code on Behaviour.
