The Role


We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to work as part of a team that will advance technical aspects of the Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric.

The project sits within wider work coordinated and led by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and this position will focus on delivering the data and analytical needs for STAR.


You will work with external partners across a variety of organisations to identify the data needs and develop research solutions to support the implementation of STAR.

This will require critical thinking, ecological understanding and strong analytical skills.

As an RA/PDRA on this project, you will work flexibly and independently to deliver agreed outputs, while developing your central role in the collaborative team.


You will be responsible for data organisation and manipulation, in particular working with raster, polygon and sparse matrix spatial data, and the development and sharing of data analysis protocols relating to the calculation of species Area of Habitat data and the Species Threat Abatement and Restoration metric.

You will also be responsible for the communication and presentation of project outputs both as scientific manuscripts and oral presentations.


This project will be placed within the Modelling, Evidence and Policy (MEP) research group, in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.

MEP aims to foster an inclusive and supportive research culture, with early career researchers taking a lead in shaping the group's ethos and activities.

The post is offered on a fixed term basis for 18 months.

Key Accountabilities
Contribute academic and technical expertise to program of research focussed on species conservation and policy
Use initiative and problem solving to meet project objectives around data analysis and delivery
Prepare scientific manuscripts presenting project outcomes
Co-ordinate own work with a diversity of external partners, led by IUCN
Present information on research progress and outcomes to internal and external project teams
Work to deadlines and manage, with support, competing priorities

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Strong skills in spatial data handling, processing and analysis
Good working knowledge of data management and experience with statistical software, particularly R.
Experience of writing up research for scientific publication
Strong communication skills, written and orally, to diverse audiences
Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
Ability to project manage and deliver to deadlines
Desirable
Work or research experience with a non-academic organisation (such as NGO, government, industry)
Experience of working with raster, polygon and sparse matrix data, generation of Area of Habitat data and calculation of the Species Threat Abatement and Restoration metric
