The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health.

Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

The postholder will be based at The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia. The Unit joined the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in February 2018.

It has an international reputation for ground-breaking research into some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the tropics, particularly in The Gambia and the West African region.

The Unit's overall goal is to improve the health of people in Low
- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) through excellence in research, health care and training. Its research program spans from basic scientific research (immunology, microbiology and molecular biology) to clinical studies, large epidemiological studies, intervention trials and translational research.

The Unit's research portfolio is organised under three themes:
Disease Control & Elimination; Vaccines & Immunity; Nutrition & Planetary Health. All research activities are supported by external competitive grants and by core facilities funded by the MRC UK.


The postholder will be an expert in immunology and/or vaccinology, including clinical trials with an excellent track of publishing as lead, senior and co-author in peer reviewed outputs.

Demonstrable strategic leader in the development of research and a clear vision of future research agenda are important skills to possess.
