Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with a keen interest and some previous experience in Learning Disability (LD) to work in our Community Learning Disability team, providing service to Adults with LD in a range of community environments across the borough of Brent.

The post holder will be based at Kingswood Centre in Kingsbury as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team, working alongside the Lead occupational therapist, physiotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and a range of other carers and community staff. The Community LD service is based on the outskirt suburb areas of London. Brent offers a green scenery surrounded by beautiful parks and is well connected with good transport links including underground train links and buses taking you right outside our office and on-site parking available at Kingswood Centre.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide specialist, culturally appropriate, evidence based occupational therapy assessments for service users in the community in order to establish and meet their occupational needs. The Occupational Therapy role is to provide assessment and intervention to individuals, promoting occupational participation and engagement and supporting individuals to gain maximum independence to live a fulfilling life in the community. This may include the assessment of activities of daily living, the use of validated standardised and adapted assessment tools, skills development, advocating for the service user, promoting access to the community and mainstream service.

To establish and maintain effective communication networks with service users, that may have complex learning and communication needs, emotional and behavioural needs, their carers, other professionals and agencies in order to ensure a comprehensive and consistent approach to client care.

To determine the impact of mental, physical and sensory conditions on service user's functional ability and undertake assessment/make recommendations with regards to the provision of interventions.

There will be professional development opportunities and the chance to expand your skills, including opportunity to develop supervision skills through providing supervision to Junior staff and OT students on clinical placements.

About us

Come and join us and be one of the friendly and supportive 300 Occupational Therapists (OTs) in CNWL. We work in many different teams in both physical and mental health, as well as a number of specialist areas. You could have a career for life with us and maintain your dual skills.

OT in CNWL is very fortunate in having a long-established professional structure and this includes an AHP director, Trust wide Professional Head of OT, borough and specialist Head OTs. This has the huge benefit of ensuring representation of our profession at all levels - both strategically and operationally.

There are opportunities to be involved in the CNWL Recovery and Wellbeing College by facilitating inpatient "snapshot" courses.

We recognise that the step between student and professional needs support so we have invested fully in our Band 5s development through robust supervision, a preceptorship programme and internal training. Success at preceptorship enables them to then be an educator for OT students. Career development opportunities are available and many of our Band 5s chose to stay with us in senior posts. There are regular borough-wide Band 5 support groups and a Brent OT forum meeting.
