Healthcare science support workers (Medical Laboratory Assistants - MLA) are required to support the pre-analytical stages of sample processing in a modern, automated and active Blood Science department.

They have a vital role in supporting positive patient pathways within the trust and the wider region to ensure Clinical diagnosis and treatment is effective and timely.


We are looking for a full time MLA to work within the Specimen Reception department of Pathology to work over a 7 day shift pattern.


The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays an important practical role in this service and speed an accuracy are essential skills in order to operate successfully.


As an MLA your day will be made up of:

  • Receiving and unpacking, labelling, sorting and centrifugation of blood tube samples ready for analysis.
  • Contributing to urgent sample processing including blood bank requests.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment for yourself and other staff.
  • Preparing consumable orders from our users for bottles, tubes, bags and forms.
  • Checking, cleaning and maintaining equipment, such as a viscometer.
  • Communicating with Biomedical Scientist staff and supporting the Blood Sciences service
  • Entering data onto laboratory system
- both paper and digital.

We will train you on all equipment and processes.

  • All pre-analytical sample preparation (including unpacking, sorting, booking-in, preparation of aliquots, storage of samples and making decisions on sample quality and labelling).
  • Decision making on ambiguous requests.
  • Entry of Patient Identification Data (PID) and test details into the laboratory computer system, a high degree of concentration is required as errors at this stage may not be corrected before results are released to the requesting clinician.
  • Filing of Samples, blocks and Request forms using either manual or electronic systems
  • Cleaning & disinfecting of work area including associated equipment.
  • Attending to telephone enquiries from service users in a polite, sensitive and professional manner.
  • Undertaking predefined database searches
  • Preparation and staining Kleihauer stains
Technical

  • Sending or inputting results to laboratory from automated analysers according to laboratory procedures.
  • Use of, maintenance and cleaning of equipment such as centrifuge
Other

  • Rotate through all relevant sections of the Department as directed by the laboratory management with relative training and competency completion.
  • Participate in individual performance reviews in accord with the Trust policy.
  • To follow, maintain and propose changes to all relevant policies and procedures.
