Digital Data & Technology (DDaT) Team

The Digital Data and Technology team will enable & catalyse a modernised, professional and user centric People Function, through the adoption of digital technologies and innovative delivery approaches allowing the Defence workforce to undertake more value-added work.


Our Mission Statement:


The Digital, Data and Technology team owns the principles and provides the expertise needed to cohere, influence, and direct the design, build and operation of defence wide people services on behalf of Chief Defence People.

The team holds the responsibility for the assurance of services delivered to the Defence workforce, ensuring they meet agreed performance standards.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description:

  • As a Lead User Researcher, you will oversee all user research activity across the DDaT Team, coordinating and prioritising the work across multiple strands of activity. You will be responsible for identifying, defining and assuring best practices and embedding this into the wider user research practice. You will lead a small team of User Researchers, potentially including additional team members from other Defence and Commercial organisations. You will also actively encourage, facilitate, and demonstrate sharing of insights and practices across the People function and the wider department.

Person specification:

The Lead User Researcher will:

  • Identify opportunities to conduct user research activities, where they add significant value to People Capability strategic objectives and those of the DDaT team.
  • Lead and Develop a team of User Researchers, including those gathered from other parts of Defence and from Commercial partners.
  • Plan, design and carry out research activities with users that help the People Function and broader teams across Defence to gain a deep understanding of the users of People Services across Defence.
  • Working collaboratively and in an inclusive manner by involving teams and users from across Defence in user research to help everyone develop a deep understanding of Defence People user needs.
  • Work across organisational boundaries to advocate, influence and ensure that People services delivery teams take a usercentred, evidencebased approach to service design and delivery.
  • Invest time in upskilling members of the DDaT team in developing practical experience of user research methods that build their ability and confidence to provide leadership on user research activities.
  • Conduct user research sessions on a regular basis, testing both highlevel concepts, and aspects of product/service design, as they are formulated, designed, developed and changed.
