Te whiwhinga mahi| The Opportunity

We are responsible for designing community-based systems of care, agreeing health and wellbeing plans, executing those plans, and monitoring outcomes which then feed into the design process. We work in partnership with our Te Whatu Ora colleagues to shape system-wide public health services across the motu.

We have an important role in supporting the Crown in its relationships with Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi. The government is committed to improving services and outcomes for Māori and strengthening the Crown's relationships with Māori.

The Principal Advisor is responsible for providing high quality information and advice in support of the work programmes in commissioning. The Principal Advisor acts as the main conduit between Commissioning and key personnel in the Office of the Wayfinder, liaising directly on Ministerial briefings and communications.

This role is based in the Te Waipounamu Region made up of Nelson Marlborough, Canterbury, South Canterbury, West Coast and Southern. You will need to be based in the region. Your location can be discussed at interview stage.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to tailor complex messages to a range of audiences.
  • Experience working strategically and applying critical thinking, as well as sound judgement in the development of options and provision of advice.
  • Experience in the development and presentation of well-articulated, unambiguous, and robust advice, papers, and reports.
  • A proven ability to use data and insights to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, to influence and guide organisational and system-level decision making.
  • Previous experience working in government and a thorough understanding of the machinery of Government.
  • Experience in developing, maintaining, and influencing relationships internally and externally, across various groups, including at a senior level.

Nau mai, uru mai | Come and join us

When you join us, you become part of transforming the health system. This is a once in a life-time change, which will touch the lives of everyone in Aotearoa for generations.

Our name, Te Whatu Ora, means 'the weaving of wellness'. Whatu is the combining of people, resources, organisations, thoughts and actions for the betterment and wellbeing of all. Whatu is also a direct reference to the pupil of the eye, and the vision required of the new entity and system.

We are working towards a system that better meets the complex demands of a growing population, addresses the persistent inequalities experienced by Māori and ensures improved access, experience and outcomes for those traditionally not well served by the system – Māori, Pacific and Disabled People.

We want to see the real you in your application and welcome the real you on board if you come and work with us. Skills are gained across many areas of our lives, not just in formal employment. If you can demonstrate the skills listed in the ad, but the experience was gained through whānau life, community or mahi aroha (volunteering) we encourage you to apply and share your story with us in your cover letter. We particularly welcome applications from our diverse Māori, Pacific, disabled, and rainbow communities.
