Chester, Cheshire, United Kingdom Chester Zoo Full time
An opportunity to use your skills and expertise to make a positive impact on our planet.

Chester Zoo is the most visited zoo in the UK and a leading conservation and education charity, helping to prevent the extinction of threatened species and having a positive impact on wildlife, globally.
What's more, we are an amazing, award-winning visitor attraction too, working hard to provide unique and inspiring visitor experiences.

As the world faces a biodiversity crisis, the role of large charity zoos is vital to the future of wildlife on our planet.

With a mission to prevent extinction, it's no surprise that we have been at the forefront of conservation for many decades.

Our team of nearly 1,000 talented people and experts, cares for over 20,000 animals and 128 acres of zoological gardens.

We run conservation science projects all over the world and ensure that all of our guests experience an inspirational day out.

This is a unique opportunity to join the Trustee Board of Chester Zoo (the North of England Zoological Society) and support the future direction of this impactful and rapidly growing visitor attraction and conservation education charity.

The Board of Trustees now seeks to add complementary skills and experiences to their existing Board to drive new ideas and support the execution of their exciting growth and conservation plans.

Indeed, there are ambitious plans ahead, including being the best zoo in the world; opening new habitats; and delivering their first overnight stay proposition.

It's a pivotal time to join the Board and be part of the next phase of the zoo's evolution as it heads towards its 100th birthday.

We are now seeking to appoint Trustees who have an affinity with our purpose and will bring deep specialist expertise as either:
Senior Conservation/Ethics/Science leader, with knowledge of preventing extinction;

OR
An accountant with experience in participating in audit committees and/or capital financing;

OR
An influential commercial business leader with the ability to leverage their network and support with major donors going forward.

As a Trustee you are a key ambassador and advocate of Chester Zoo.

Responsibilities include supporting the development and delivery of the zoo's vision, mission and strategic direction; the performance of employees and corporate behaviour; compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; acting as a guardian for the zoo's assets; and ensuring that governance is of the highest possible standard.

In doing so, you'll get to work alongside world leading scientists and talented people from a range of fields and disciplines who love wildlife and care about nature.

Reflective of the scale, complexity and diversity of the organisation, the high calibre Board of Trustees bring skills and expertise from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, from business leaders to conservation experts.

Whilst previous board experience would be beneficial, it's not a pre-requisite.

What is important is that each Trustee brings their own unique perspective to the table and demonstrates an ability to contribute to the broader discussions and decisions that shape the future of Chester Zoo - ultimately impacting the worldwide conservation mission and their circa 2 million visitors a year.

The anticipated time commitment is circa 12 days per annum (including six formal meetings a year and four committee meetings).

Whilst Trustees' expenses are met, this appointment is not remunerated.
