London, Greater London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time

Job summary

Bone & Joint Health, Barts Health NHS Trust

Senior Orthopaedic Extremity Trauma Fellowship

6 months - 1-year fixed term - starting October 2024 and year fixed term)

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic service within Barts Health NHS Trust.

This senior 'extremity' trauma fellowship, which is open to both UK and international applicants, sits within the heart of the orthopaedic trauma service at Royal London, the Level-1 trauma centre (MTC) at Barts Health. The primary goal is to gain experience and independence in lower limb, long-bone and periarticular fractures. The ideal applicant for this fellowship is a senior orthopaedic trainee, at the end of their training, who is wanting to finesse their trauma skills and become comfortable with the range of pathology seen within the acute, Level-1 orthopaedic trauma service. The fellow sits within the pelvic/polytrauma group and so they gain experience treating patients exposed to the very highest-energy injury patterns.

Main duties of the job

The ideal applicant for this fellowship is a senior orthopaedic trainee, at the end of their training, who is wanting to finesse their trauma skills and become comfortable with the range of pathology seen within the acute, Level-1 orthopaedic trauma service. The fellow sits within the pelvic/polytrauma group and so they gain experience treating patients exposed to the very highest-energy injury patterns.

Successful applicants will work alongside a dedicated Post-CCT pelvic trauma fellow (advertised separately) who's role is more aligned to fixing pelvic and acetabular fractures. Successful applicants to this post (the extremity fellow) do get exposure to managing pelvicinjuries (including 1-st surgeon operating), but it is not setup as a formal P+A fellowship.

Undertaking all aspects of upper limb, lower limb, complex periarticular and exposure to some pelvic and acetabular surgery. Ability and opportunity to train trainees to fix complex fractures and to be a mentor. There are multiple opportunities for audit, research and service development. Developing as an independent practitioner in operating lists and clinic.

This job description is not an exhaustive statement of the scope of the job, and the post holder may be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the position.

The post holder might be required to work across the Trust at any time throughout the duration of his/her contract, which may entail travel and working at different hospital.
