Swindon, Swindon, United Kingdom Great Western Railway Full time

Who are we?
GWR is the proud custodian of Brunel's railway - one of the most prestigious networks in the world. We have some of the newest trains in the country and exciting plans to extend our services.

With over one hundred million passenger journeys each year, we carry people to over 275 stations in the Southwest, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, passing through beautiful country and some of the UK's top tourist destinations.

We are transforming the way people think about train travel, empowering our team of over 6,000 people from diverse backgrounds to make it a great experience for our customers.

Together, we will revalue rail as a very special way to travel, giving customers a warm welcome and outstanding service.

What is the job?
This role is a sales-based role with high levels of customer service. You'll give a professional, friendly welcome to our customers, providing assistance and information whilst you work onboard. No two days are the same.

One day you may be offering the at-seat trolley service to customers in standard class, selling a wide selection of refreshments and snacks, and the next you will be serving the GWR complimentary range to customers in first class.

You'll be supporting your team and ensuring the safety of passengers and your colleagues.

What are the responsibilities?

  • To promote and sell GWR products onboard trains by engaging with customers to ensure they have the journey they deserve.
  • To offer a complimentary trolley service for customers travelling in first class
  • To sell refreshments to customers travelling in standard class
  • To be an ambassador for GWR, following our vision and values to provide the best customer service.
  • To adhere to all GWR safety principles, providing the safest possible journey for everyone
  • To maintain a clean, hygienic and pleasant environment

Skills and experience required:

  • Customer service experience within a sales background
  • Cash handling experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work both alone and as part of a team
  • Experience of food safety and stock rotation desirable

What will I need?

  • A passion for providing the best customer experience
  • The ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends and bank holidays
  • To be proactive and able to use your initiative
  • To be friendly, cheerful, and approachable
  • To be comfortable working in a regulated environment

What is the reward?

As well as a great team environment and comprehensive training, all GWR colleagues enjoy a range of benefits including defined benefit pension scheme, free rail travel across the GWR network for you and your family, company-sponsored health care plan, discounted shopping and gym membership and an employee assistance programme.

Your uniform is provided.

The basic salary during your probationary period is £21,525, rising to £28,700 after probation.

What else do I need to know?
You must live within one hour's travelling time from the station.

There are very early starts and late finishes, so you must be able to travel to and from the station at times when there is no public transport available.

This is being advertised to fill current vacancies and create a talent pool for expected vacancies.

This position is a 12-month fixed term contract.

We value our differences such as age, gender, LGBTQIA, ethnicity, religion and disability. We maintain zero tolerance towards any form of prejudice towards our colleagues, customers, and future talent.

We celebrate and encourage diversity of thought, progressive ways of working and seeing all our colleagues grow and thrive.

We review all roles and job descriptions to ensure they are accessible and, where possible, we support and provide flexible working options; we recommend that you refer to each vacancy description for further details.
