Willows Counselling and
Training provides counselling for adults and has a particular expertise working with those impacted by abuse and trauma. In addition to counselling activities, Willows also runs a thriving training operation, offering certified training qualifications in counselling as well as courses for local businesses and other charitable organisations.


We are seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking and inspirational Chief Executive who will lead our charity in its next stage of development.

You will be committed to our vision of better mental health and wellbeing for the local community. As Willows is founded on Christian principles, you will be sympathetic to the Christian faith.

Building on a strong foundation, you will have the drive and passion to lead and develop a team of committed staff and volunteers.

You will be directly responsible for overseeing the growth in unrestricted funds; the delivery of projects to fulfil the strategic objectives and to oversee and ensure the success of all operations.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Lead Willows with vision, integrity and commitment, to achieve its mission, strategy and objectives.
  • Lead the development of Willows' strategic plan and ensure the charity is committed to its delivery.
  • Oversee the management of Willows' activities to protect its financial interests and reserves, and identify and address the main areas of risk.
  • Oversee and develop the Counselling and Training services, as well as the centre/building and infrastructure which supports these.
  • Develop and strengthen strategic and working relationships with partners through collaborative programme planning and delivery, informed by sound impact monitoring and evaluation practices.
  • Ensure liaison with churches, GPs, Social Services, The Health Commission, Health Trusts and other agencies and voluntary organisations, both locally and nationally, in promoting and developing the work of Willows
  • Identify, investigate and recommend to the Board appropriate projects for Willows 'funding and support.
  • Encourage and develop a culture of innovation and thought leadership to enable Willows to deliver the best possible impact for stakeholders.
  • Manage a Communications strategy and represent Willows publicly at fundraising events, on social media channels and with key audience groups, to raise The Willow's profile and generate income for Willows and its mission.
  • Recruit, develop, support and engage a strong team and ensure that employees take timely and effective action in fulfilling their responsibilities.
  • Help to maintain a strong and effective Board; assist in attracting high calibre trustees to the Board and work with trustees to ensure their skills and expertise are fully utilised by Willows.
  • Within the charity governance framework, ensure that policies and procedures that protect the organisation and its stakeholders are maintained and followed.

Person Specification

  • Senior leadership experience in an organisation of comparable scale and complexity. Demonstrable interest in mental health and wellbeing.
  • Passionate, creative, entrepreneurial and versatile; an innovative, impactfocused, strategic thinker, prepared to push the boundaries while remaining true to the values or the charity.
  • A strong and confident leader who can inspire those within the charity and who seeks opportunities to leverage the skills and goodwill of a range of supporters in a collaborative manner.
  • Excellent written, oral, and public speaking skills; a persuasive communicator with strong interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Able to work in harmony with the Board, with a clear understanding of the governance structure; willing and able to participate in the joint setting of organisational strategy.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience of managing budgets.
  • Strong fundraising experience including: an appreciation of the importance of social media in raising the profile and funding of a charity; devising and managing campaigns; and an understanding of funding opportunities available.
