We are looking for an enthusiastic gardener to work within the garden team at Torre Abbey.

Torre Abbey is Torbay's most historic building complex dating from 1196 and is an ancient scheduled monument set within 17.8 acres of parkland, including a walled garden with important glasshouse plant collections.

What you'll be doing


You will be part of a passionate team of staff and volunteers offering our visitors an outstanding horticultural experience in an historic setting.


This means assisting with all gardening activity within the garden and grounds, including the full range of manual gardening activities and using power tools.

You will ensure that the gardens are always safe and well presented to a high standard to maximise our reputation as an historic attraction and event space.


As a key member of the team you will support the development and supervision of volunteers and trainees and will provide cover for the Senior Garden Co-ordinator if required.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in a wide range of gardening skills with appropriate plant knowledge.
  • Experience of working within a team including volunteers and trainees, enabling good working and customer relationships.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices.
  • A willingness to develop excellent plant husbandry and conservation skills.
  • Competent IT skills.

Interviews are expected to be conducted during the week commencing 13th May 2024.

Skills:

Essential:

  • Good horticultural skills including reasonable level of plant husbandry.
  • Organisational skills with good attention to detail.
  • Able to work on own initiative and to follow work routines with mínimal supervision.
  • Able to demonstrate strong customer service ethos with good people skills enabling positive relationships to other colleagues.
  • Ability to work flexible and unsocial hours.

Knowledge:

Essential:

  • Knowledge of a range of horticultural techniques covering a variety of plant families and types.
  • Knowledge of health and safety and compliance relevant to horticulture.
  • Some understanding of the volunteer role.

Experience & Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Practical experience of horticulture.
  • Experience with powered and manual garden tools and equipment.
  • NPTC level 2 in horticulture or equivalent.
