An opportunity has arisen to appoint a permanent full-time specialist doctor in valvular heart disease. The job involves the inpatient and outpatient management of patients with heart valve disease and endocarditis with advanced echocardiographyskills. The appointment is to work within the heart valve team which is an integrated service comprised of imaging valve consultants (echocardiography/ cardiac CT/structural TOE), the transcatheter interventional team, cardiac surgeons and the endocarditis team. The post holder will work in all aspects of valvular heart disease suited to their experience and competencies and the priorities of service provision.This is a fulltime post with 10 PA's. There will be 1.5 SPA available in the job plan in order to achieve revalidation requirements for the GMC and meet PDP objective.

The applicant should have a good clinical and academic background inechocardiography and heart valve disease. Additional advanced imaging skills, particularly in cardiac CT or expertise in cardiac MRI for heart valve disease patientswould also be encouraged

Main duties of the job This is a full-time post (10 PAs), and the appointee will work closely with the team of intervention consultants, specialist nurses, clinical scientists and physiologists to deliver clinical services both at Guy's and St Thomas' as well as the OP Cardiology service

The Cardiovascular Centre at St Thomas' Hospital is one of the largest in the UK, with facilities including a six-bedded Coronary Care Unit, over 60 cardiology inpatient beds across two wards, a suite of five Catheter laboratories, four Cardiac theatres, a state-of-the-art hybrid theatre and two dedicated outpatient centres. There is excellent provision of the full range of imaging facilities including echocardiography cardiac CT, nuclear medicine and cardiac MRI.

The post-holder will be accountable to Clinical Director, Cardiovascular.

Research, Teaching and TrainingWhere possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director.To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the ClinicalDirector to ensure external accreditation of training post.The post holder will need to demonstrate continuing professional development.Performance ManagementTo work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure highperformance in the following areas:Clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates.Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.Operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demandmanagement.

Medical Staff ManagementTo work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.To ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitmentsTo participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required.To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.To be responsible for the annual appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager.

GovernanceTo review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.To work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Clinical Director.Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.To role model good practice for infection control to all members of themultidisciplinary team.

Strategy and Business PlanningTo participate in the business planning and objective setting process for thedirectorate and Trust where appropriate.To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director.
