Trust Grade Registrar in Infectious Diseases

We are pleased to offer 2 fixed term appointments for trust grade doctors (SpR level) in infectious diseases.

One post is based in the Infectious diseases ward at St Mary's Hospital and the other post is for Infectious diseases in-reach work at Charing Cross Hospital.

Both positions are full time appointments, with no on-call requirement. The posts are for 3 months from June 2024, to support the existing teams.


The posts are suitable for doctors with who are working at registrar grade, who are looking to pursue a career in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology or Virology.

The SMH post holder will work alongside an IMT1 (GIM) and IMT3 (GIM) doctor to provide ward cover on the Infectious Diseases ward with whom they will liaise for leave, and a clinical fellow (SHO).

The current system is that there is a consultant of the month who conducts twice daily ward rounds and daily reviews of unwell patients or patients new to the ward.

The post holder's role includes inpatient ward rounds, attendance at MDTs (TB, microbiology, endocarditis) and ward work (including referrals, investigations request, reviewing patients, liaising with families and colleagues.) There are options to attend the infectious diseases clinic, other specialty clinics and be engagement in the extensive departmental activities.


The CXH post holder will work alongside another registrar in infectious diseases and microbiology, and consultants in Infectious diseases, There is close liaison with the microbiology and infection control teams to provide a comprehensive Infection in-reach service.

The post holder will participate in infectious diseases OP clinics, OPAT clinics and regular consultant led ward rounds, as well as acute reviews of patients with serious infections, including bacteraemias, tuberculosis and neuro-infectious.


Both post holders will gain excellent experience in managing patients with community and hospital acquired infections including fever in the returning traveller.

The infectious diseases team share responsibility for TB patients with the respiratory team and there is a thriving MDR-TB service led by Professor Kon.

We work closely with acute medicine to support the flow of patients and often see patients in A&E as well as in SDEC (same day emergency care.) We encourage the post holders to see these patients as well as reviewing referrals.

The post holders will have the opportunity to develop relevant generic skills including leadership, teaching, communication and managing workload effectively.

They will ensure excellent care of patients and ensure collaborative working within the MDT.

There are many additional activities available, including teaching (year 5 medical students,) Quality Improvement and Audit,) presentations at the clinical academic seminars and participating in case reports.
