West Scotland Deaf Children's Society (WSDCS) provides social and emotional support to deaf children, young people and their families.

Our charity is based in Glasgow City Centre but provides support across the West of Scotland through clubs, events and our Family Support Service.

WSDCS is committed to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people, working to empower them and improve mental health and wellbeing.

To support this work, we are recruiting for the above position.

WSDCS is an organisation led by a Board of Trustees. We maintain a reputation of working positively with families, keeping them at the centre of everything we do.

The day-to-day work of the charity is delivered by our small staff team and we are looking for a new Family Support Officer to help us achieve our goals and ambitions.


The focus of the role will be to provide information and support to families and carers of deaf children and young people and support our wider programme of activities for families.

We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic person who can help evolve the society and work with our friendly team.


WSDCS works closely with NDCS and other professionals and organisations to provide the best possible support for families who have a deaf child or children.

We deliver consistent and high-quality support based on child-centred principles and practice.

We expect interviews to be held in Glasgow week commencing 11 December 2023.

Annual Salary:
£ pro rata for 25 hours is£23,374)

Hours:25 hours - over three days, hybrid working considered.

Main Purpose of Post


To support families and children across West Scotland using a child-centred approach and an understanding of the law, policy, and the issues that affect deaf children and their families.

To work with key professionals to ensure that families get the emotional and practical support that they need to allow their child to thrive.


Key Tasks

  • To abide by the policies, procedures and practices of WSDCS.
  • To take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
  • To ensure records are maintained in compliance with WSDCS policy.
  • To be able to effectively manage own working time and workload.
  • To take responsibility for own professional development.
  • To identify where other support is required by families, creating plans with them to address this.
  • Ensure that, where necessary, families are signposted to other appropriate professional organisations.
  • To attend relevant professional networking meetings and maintain professional contacts.
  • To provide and/or source delivery of training to beneficiaries and professionals.
  • To visit families in their own homes and understand lone working policies and procedures.
  • To work with schools, youth groups and other organisations to support deaf children and young people.
  • To support and lead other activities provided by WSDCS including clubs, events and trips.
  • To support families and children to understand deafness and its meaning for them, helping them to be more independent.
  • To work effectively with the Board of Trustees, staff team and volunteers.
  • Undertake such other tasks as may reasonably be required.

Family Support Officer

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A good understanding of the skills and practices required to deliver person centred support to deaf children and young people and their families.
  • Experience of working directly with children and young people.
  • Good understanding of and empathy with the challenges facing the families of deaf children.
  • Proven experience of engaging with professional organisations.
  • Proven ability of team working.
  • Able to plan and prioritise own work effectively and work on own initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven experience in at least one of the areas of education, deafness, welfare benefits, health, community care and Equality, Diversity a
