The role

The library is a vibrant and busy place after school, with students dropping in to do homework and research using the books and computers before going on to clubs in school, or going home with parents, or using the late bus service.


We are seeking to appoint a member of staff to assist with the supervision of Prep after school which runs from Monday to Friday from 4.00pm to 6.00pm each day during the school term-time*All staff share the responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the students, in accordance with the School's safeguarding policies.


Key responsibilities


Responsibilities include monitoring students signing in and out of the library and café, taking calls from reception when parents arrive to collect their children.

Prep staff actively supervise students in the library, ensuring that an atmosphere conducive to informal work and study is maintained.

In quiet periods Prep staff carry out general library tasks such as shelving recently returned books, tidying laptop trolleys and other library areas.


  • Prep staff will actively supervise students using the Library after school by moving through the different prep areas and being a visible presence.
  • Be a visible presence of authority ensuring that all students including sixth formers sign in and out of prep.
  • Staff will remind students of the library rules and help ensure that they are adhered to

Rules include:

acceptable use of school computers; mobile phones switched to silent and only used for homework or texts relating to end of day pickup; no music; no eating or drinking apart from water in a bottle.


  • Ensure students (including anyone in the Sixth Form Study) who use the late bus service pack up their belongings, sign out of the library and make their way to the late bus service in reasonable time.
  • Staff will be required to assist in the evacuation of the library areas should the alarm sound. Information and training will be given.
  • In September Prep Staff may be asked to accompany new students to the front of school to ensure that they do not get lost. Juniors attending Prep are collected by parents from Reception and they are escorted there by a member of Prep staff, unless they get the late bus.
  • Be responsible for closing the Library and securing of the building at end of the day.

The Person

Skills/abilities

  • Ability to forge an effective professional relationship with students and to gain their respect in a supervisory role, thus ensuring an atmosphere conducive to informal work and study is maintained.
  • Ability to learn, understand and implement school rules and procedures, e.g., student mobile phones to be switched to silent, what to do in the event of an emergency evacuation.
  • Strong initiative.
  • An organised and methodical approach with regard to monitoring students' whereabouts and signing in/out, with an attention to detail in respect of the required record keeping.

Experience, knowledge and qualifications

  • Some experience of working with children, or in a school environment, would be an advantage.

Salary and benefits

  • This is a permanent, parttime post working on a termtime basis in line with published School dates.
  • Hours of work are 10 hrs per week, 4.00pm 6.00pm Monday to Friday
  • Paid prorata holiday entitlement of 5.9 weeks (this is based on a fulltime equivalent amount of 7.6 weeks per year inclusive of public holidays), to be taken during the School Holidays
  • The salary range for working 10 hrs per week is between £4,681 (min) to £4,849 (max) prorata (based on a fulltime equivalent range of £22,596 to £23,408). Starting salary will be dependent upon skills and experience.
  • Employees may join a stakeholder pension scheme. The School currently double matches employee contributions with a minimum employee contribution of 3%. The maximum employer contribution is capped at 10% of gross salary. The School also offers a salary sacrifice scheme for pension contributions.
