What is the role of a Support Worker?


The Support Worker job can take on many roles and responsibilities such as assisting the student in classes to keep them focussed and on task, working as a personal assistant to help them access relevant research materials for assessments, note taking support.

This is not an extensive list of duties that the support worker can be carried out and will vary on a student-by-student basis.

However, this role is vital in assisting the student's academic progression.


It is important that the relationship between the in-class Support Worker and the student is a positive one, as we expect the student to work with the same Support Worker throughout the full academic year.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Providing both inclass and out of class support to students with a range of specific learning difficulties to assist with their academic progression.
  • The role may encompass assisting the student staying on task in classes, notetaking, the moving of equipment to assist the student, orientation or any other tasks required. There will be no personal care involved.
  • To maintain a professional role as a support worker and be aware of the need to always maintain this professional relationship with the student. You will be expected to work as part of the College & University support team.
  • Deliver support according to Theorise and each of our clients' guidelines and codes of conduct.
  • A flexible approach to working hours is required.
  • Manage paperwork effectively, i.e., completing time sheets and any reports required.
  • You will be expected to represent Theorise in a professional manner, this includes adhering to our policies regarding confidentiality and safeguarding.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • We expect you to have excellent communication and organisational skills, a willingness to support students with particular needs, and an approachable, patient and understanding manner.
  • Ability to and knowledge of working with individuals with a range of specific learning difficulties.
  • Ideally have experience of working with students in a higher education environment or experience in studying at college or university level.
  • The ability to monitor student's progress and make recommendations if required to the College or University Disability & Inclusion Team.
It is essential that applicants have a degree ideally in a relevant field to the role and is highly desirable that applicants hold one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Autism / Asperger's Qualifications of one or all of the following: All NAS core autism online training modules' hold a PG Certificate in Autism / Asperger's
Support will be carried out based on the timetable of the students you are assigned to work with.

However, some of out of class hours may to be required dependant on the students' needs that will have some flexibility.

Hours may vary considerably on a student-to-student basis, but these are usually in working hours. (Mon-Fri This role will require face-to-face support so applicants must be willing and able to travel within Edinburgh.
