About Us

We are currently seeking a Senior Nuclear Assessor to join our Nuclear Waste Assessment Team. At the Environment Agency, our mission is to regulate the disposal of radioactive waste within the nuclear industry in England. Our nuclear waste assessors offer specialized technical advice and support as part of our regulatory capability.

Using your expertise in radioactive waste management, you will collaborate with nuclear site regulators and engage with various external bodies to assess proposals for the management and disposal of radioactive waste in both proposed and existing facilities.

Representing the Environment Agency within the nuclear industry, regulators in the UK and abroad, the public, and occasionally the media, your work will significantly impact radioactive waste management in the UK.

Why Choose Us:

  • Make a Substantial Impact: By joining our team, you will actively contribute to creating a more resilient and sustainable environment, addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
  • Professional Development: The Environment Agency offers opportunities for career growth and the chance to work on diverse and impactful projects, enhancing your skills and gaining valuable experience.
  • Continuous Learning: You will play a crucial role in providing technical training and mentoring staff on regulation activities, fostering continuous learning within the team.

  • Champion Health, Safety, and Wellbeing: Lead the promotion of a positive HSW culture within the team, prioritizing health, safety, and wellbeing practices.
  • Incident Response: Respond effectively to incidents, playing a crucial role in business continuity during such situations to support the team.

What You Will Do:

Joining our Nuclear Regulation Group's Waste Assessment Team, you will provide specialized technical advice to regulate existing nuclear sites and influence the environmental performance of future facilities.

  • Assess proposed and existing disposal facilities for radioactive waste.
  • Review nuclear site waste management plans for higher activity wastes.
  • Contribute to the development of nuclear waste management policy.
  • Assess radioactive waste management for new reactor designs and nuclear power stations.

Essential Requirements:

Alongside a Scientific Degree or equivalent vocational experience, you should have lived in the UK for the last 3 years for enhanced security checks. Significant experience in treating, conditioning, and disposing of solid radioactive waste is essential, as well as an ability to analyze technical proposals and safety cases.

You should also have:

  • The ability to make decisions based on incomplete information.
  • Strong prioritization skills to manage tasks effectively.
  • Excellent technical report writing capabilities.
  • Experience in customer-facing roles and relationship management.
  • Effective communication skills to engage with various stakeholders.

We expect our Senior Nuclear Waste Assessors to bring considerable experience in the industry, able to lead and understand the work immediately. The role involves travel to office and nuclear site locations in England, with occasional overseas trips, requiring a full UK driving license.

Benefits:

Embrace a culture that values diversity and inclusivity, providing support and empowerment to make informed decisions. Enjoy a competitive salary, generous holiday allowance, career progression opportunities, and various flexible working arrangements.

Apply now and start an exciting career journey with the Environment Agency, contributing to a sustainable future and the safe utilization of nuclear energy.
