Nuclear Fission Specialist Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Nuclear Fission Specialist to join our team at the National Nuclear Laboratory. As a Nuclear Fission Specialist, you will play a crucial role in deploying reliable low-carbon power at scale.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of a secure supply chain for uranium enrichment and fuel fabrication in the UK.
  • Support the deployment of a fleet of various Gigawatt (GWe) reactors, Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR).
  • Collaborate with world-leading researchers to enhance skills and knowledge in nuclear science, technology, and engineering.
About the Role

As a Nuclear Fission Specialist, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining a secure supply chain for uranium enrichment and fuel fabrication.
  • Supporting the deployment of new nuclear reactors and fuel types.
  • Collaborating with researchers to enhance skills and knowledge in nuclear science, technology, and engineering.
The Bursary Scheme

We are offering a bursary scheme to support students working on topics of national priority relating to uranium-based nuclear fuels and supporting front-end fuel cycle activities.

  • Fuel Manufacturing and waste/effluents management
  • Fuel Performance

The bursary will be awarded on the basis of financial need, compatibility with the aims and scope of the National Nuclear Laboratory, and on recommendation of the panel.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Accredited courses with in-scope uranics science or engineering content.
  • Full or part-time post-graduate master's including taught or by research programmes with modular or project components.
  • Full or part-time integrated undergraduate master's courses wherein the student is completing their final year, year in industry or masters project component.
  • Modules at master's degree level being taken with examination being taken as a Continuing Professional Development module, independently or for credit on a post-graduate certificate, post-graduate diploma or part/full-time MSc/MRes.

  • A clear plan for after completing their studies.
