An exciting opportunity has become available in Ophthalmology for band 4 assistant practitioner/associate registered nurse in Eye outpatients. Are you looking for a fast paced, varied role using excellent communication skills, role modelling, and patient focussed.


You will support the assessment of visual acuity, instillation of eye drops, use of medicines management, preparing patients for invasive procedures, carrying out pre-assessment checks, supporting virtual clinics, cannulation, venesection, supporting pre-laser safety checks, acting as the patients advocate, supporting those with vulnerabilities and developing care plans for them whilst in our care, supporting the junior and senior team including supporting new HCA with their healthcare certificate sign off.

Our service runs 6 days, Monday - Saturday, with some cross site working on occasion.

Our full-time workers enjoy a good work life balance with a 4-day week across the 6 day service, latest finishing time 19.30.

Your Responsibilities

What you'll do

  • Implement and provide high standards of individualised care for patients experiencing physical and psychological conditions under the supervision of a registered nurse/practitioner; contributes to assessment of care needs.
  • To provide emotional and practical support to patients and their relatives as appropriate
  • To work in a collaborative and cooperative manner with all members of the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of patient care, recognising and respecting their own contribution within the care team
  • Carries out nursing & ophthalmic Nursing procedures
  • Supervise clinical support workers in same area; train and assess clinical support workers at Bands 2 and 3 with use of leadership skills
  • Opportunities to lead small teams and build skills towards organising larger teams.


We have invested in a large expansion to the existing department which has resulted in new clinic rooms, specialist laser technology, state of the art diagnostic equipment and almost doubled our capacity; this is a very exciting time to join eye outpatients, to be part of an expanding service and innovative changes.

We value all of the teams' ideas to improve patient services and experience, our band 4's have been involved in developing display boards, carrying out teaching sessions and new ways of working.

What we're looking for


We are looking for highly motivated, trustworthy, professional & reliable band 4's with a keen interest in Ophthalmology to join our expanding team.

Previous Ophthalmic experience is not a requirement of this post, however a devotion to develop & learn is paramount. There will be specific in-house training to develop specialised Ophthalmic knowledge, skills and diagnostic assessments.

A commitment to self-development is required to progress within the role, protected time will be given to work with experienced staff in gaining new practical skills, with a balance of using some own time to fulfil the written requirements of each competency.


As a team we focus on teaching and supporting all new starters are provided with buddies to support on the job training and we would hope & encourage this to be reciprocated when future new starters join our team.
