We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow to join ODI's Politics and Governance team (PoGo). These are key roles in the PoGo team, which focus on the following ares of work:

To design, lead, oversee, fundraise and deliver a high impact programme of work on effective international engagement in situations of conflict, fragility, violence and peacebuilding: a priority impact objective for ODI's Politics and Governance programme and for ODI more broadly.

In line with ODI's overall focus on equity, inclusive growth and social justice, and its ambition to decolonize the production of knowledge, to work in partnership with Global South stakeholders, to expand ODI's geographical analytical capacity (in particular in the Middle East, Sahel) and ability to work cross-institutionally, through policy focused research, dissemination, advisory and convenings, to shape thinking of policy makers globally (multilateral institutions (DFIs and UN), bilateral governments).

To bring micro and macro political economy analytical lens to the study of violence, conflict and fragility and to the implementation of cross-institutional high impact research, dissemination and advisory work with policymakers (on climate, humanitarian action, trade and economic policy, development finance, and gender and social policy).

About the Programme/Department

ODI's Politics and Governance Programme (PoGo) brings together global leaders in political economy analysis, who use evidence-based, applied research, analysis and advice to policy makers, to understand how and why politics and political systems work the way they do, how power, structures, institutions, norms, and ideas matter, and how these shape prospects for building a social contract and advancing progressive change at global and local levels. The Politics and Governance team leads ODI's critical work on Conflict, Fragility & Peacebuilding, Democracy, Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law; Digital Societies, Technology, AI and the Future of Work and the decolonisation of production of knowledge in International Development. The team also provides political economy analytical support to ODI's different thematic teams (Development and Public Finance, Gender, Equity and Social Policy, Humanitarian Policy, Climate and Sustainability).

About you:

Research Fellow

The Research Fellow post requires substantial policy research or equivalent experience, a record of collaborative work, publications and public affairs (convenings), and clear evidence of successful fundraising, development and management of a number of projects brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

Senior Research Fellow

The Senior Research Fellow post requires substantive years experience (in an RF or equivalent position) and is intended for those displaying a substantial record of programme and project management, involving collaborative policy research, advisory work and public affairs and communications work. Senior Research Fellows are expected to contribute to policy research across a range of topics and to be viewed as a well networked authority in their own field with track record in the development of influential ideas, policy engagements and research effective collaborations. They are expected to assess and develop new areas of research, research collaborations and networks at ODI and to make a significant contributions to ODIs cross institutional work. They are expected to secure funding and leading on fundraising proposals for the team.

Person Specification:

  • A degree and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline;
  • Extensive and deep geographical knowledge (e.g., Middle East, Sahel) of key issues pertaining to international engagement and peace-security architecture in conflict-affected / fragile situations (humanitarian, development, peace)
  • Fluency in English, and a good command of at least one other language (French, Arabic).
  • Research collaborations and high-profile policy research engagements
  • Experience in policy-oriented research, demonstrated by a track record of publications, reports and wide dissemination.
  • Extensive research and work experience in and on issues of relevance in contexts affected by conflict, violence, fragility, peacebuilding processes, including in LIC / LMICs
  • Strong analytical skills, a capacity to write clearly, and excellent organisational and oral communication skills
  • Political sensitivity and diplomacy
  • A demonstrated capacity for policy advisory or public-affairs work, based on an analytical approach, and an innovative and creative communications ability.
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to translate research ideas into fundable projects
  • Excellent communication abilities in relation to a wide variety of audiences
  • Skills in negotiation, listening, communication of ideas, problem solving, decision making
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Time management skills, including managing a complex and varied workload

Desirable

  • Internationally recognised thought leader in their chosen field
  • Fluency in a language other than English and competency in others
  • Experience of working in international organizations
  • A history of engagement in major policy processes
  • Skilled and regular active use of social media to disseminate research ideas in clear concise and accessible ways
  • Regular contribution to widely read / respected commentary and publications (e.g., academic journals, including in an editorial capacity)
  • Active membership of professional associations and networks
