We have and exciting opportunity for a Registered Children's Nurse to work alongside the metabolic team for 12 months, as a maternity leave secondment or fixed term contract. The Clinical Nurse Specialist role will give the post holder the opportunity to work with children and young people with a variety of metabolic conditions and support both in-patient and out-patient care.

The successful candidate will be supported to gain skills as a clinical nurse specialist, supporting patient cohorts, along with colleagues and the wider multi disciplinary team. There will also be opportunity for learning and expanding knowledge around metabolic conditions and complex disorders.

The IMD department is part of the Medical Directorate at Birmingham Women's & Children's Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job
  • To ensure effective two-way communication with the IMD Team, Wards, Outpatients Departments and other specialities, so that all patients receive optimum care.
  • To be responsible as part of a team for the day to day running of the IMD nursing service, working with the MDT to provide an operational response to oncall issues within the working day.
  • Provide nursing teams, Primary Health Care Teams, community agencies and hospital staff, with relevant information on nursing care and on going management of the child, to allow appropriate care to be provided.
  • Engage other non-statutory agencies in the provision of care for children.
  • To maintain accurate records in accordance with Data Protection Act and Trust policy.
  • Keep updated on new disease treatments/management regimes, relating to the patient caseload.
  • Take a role in nursing projects to develop evidence based nursing in the care of children with IMD's.
  • To participate in training and education of the CYP, their carer and health and social care professionals involved in the management of the condition.
  • Help with the development of education literature about treatment/care of children and adults with metabolic conditions
  • To participate in IMD clinics to support patients in the OPD setting and following up any highlighted issues
  • To provide cross cover of Newborn screening and effective communication to families.

  • RSCN/RN Child Branch / RN child
  • Current NMC registration
  • A Degree in Nursing or working towards
Desirable
  • Teaching qualification
  • GCP training
  • Paediatric Assessment Skills qualification
Knowledge/Experience Essential
  • Experience of nursing children with a wide range of medical conditions.
  • Knowledge of the Trusts safeguarding policies and procedures and the ability to raise concerns appropriately
  • Experience in the management of the children with IMD conditions
  • Commitment to practising, monitoring and teaching a high standard of clinical care
Desirable
  • Evidence of audit or research projects
  • Ability to make autonomous clinical decisions
Skills Essential
  • High Level communication skills to enable communicating with distressed families
  • Mastery of English Language - spoken and written
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to prioritise demanding workload and that of others
  • Ability to identify stress in self and others and to take effective action to manage the situation
Desirable
  • Able to teach in formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to organise clinics and inpatient activity.
