An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the council's financial Governance Team as a VAT and Financial Procedures Specialist.

The Governance Team covers VAT, financial procedures and bank reconciliations.

The objectives of the team are to ensure VAT compliance across the authority, keeping financial procedures up to date, ensuring the bank reconciliation is completed and providing advice council wide on all these issues.

The role is supported by a Governance Accountant and external Public Sector VAT consultants to help provide advice on complex VAT issues.


The VAT and Financial Procedures role involves:

  • Providing complex VAT advice council wide
  • Ensuring VAT compliance council wide
  • Completing and sending monthly VAT returns in an accurate and timely manner
  • Annual partial exemption calculation
  • Training end users on VAT matters
  • Attending forums and keeping up to date with latest VAT guidance and legislation
  • Updating financial procedural guidance

Skills Required:

  • Some experience of VAT issues
  • Experience of preparing and filing VAT returns
  • Enquiring mind and good analytical skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good communication skills


The council offers flexible working arrangements but the role may involve occasional travelling to council offices within the area and to attend forums and training sessions.


During the initial period of employment it will be necessary to have a period of time working permanently within the Scunthorpe or Brigg office to allow for knowledge transfer and onboarding to take place.

Following this initial phase, agile working arrangements will then apply.
