Role within the Nursing Development Team, based within Tolworth Hospital. The Development Nurse will support newly qualified nurses, preceptors and band 6 staff and liaise with a wide range of Trust colleagues and stakeholders to maintain the quality of the band 5- 6 workforce.

The job holder must be passionate about workforce development, nursing education and teaching. The job holder will offer guidance to managers and senior nurses on NMC standards in nurses' education, maximising the use of mentors, preceptor, development programmes and the provision of development opportunities across the Trust. The Development nurse must be a good team worker, possessing excellent communication and leadership skills. Main duties of the job Reporting to the Senior Development Nurse for Post Registration the post holder will work across the nursing clinical areas at SWLSTG, in partnership with team managers, Heads of Nurses and Capital Nurse.
  • To provide effective leadership for the coordination and delivery of educational development programs for the band 5-6 workforce and to support student experience educational initiatives where appropriate.
  • To maintain the quality of the practice learning environment and promote development opportunities to enhance newly qualified nurse experience and career development.
  • To ensure that action plans for newly qualified nurses embedded in clinical areas reflect good practice detailing structured goal development and are individualized to reflect newly qualified nurses learning needs.
  • To advocate for newly qualified nurses and clinical teams/ staff when issues arise and areas for development are identified.
  • To lease with key stakeholders including NHS England, Capital Nurse and Trust colleagues Legacy Mentors, Human Resources, Heads of Nursing and service delivery leads to share examples of good practice.

  • To maintain records in accordance with the NMC standards for record keeping and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • To develop a close working relationship with Trust teaching staff to ensure a coherent delivery of the preceptorship programme and other development programmes inclusive of the band 5-6 workforce.
Management
  • To assist the deputy development nurse in coordinating development programmes and initiatives across the Trust.
  • To support the personal and career development of the deputy development nurse and project coordinator for the workstream acting as a positive role model.
  • To assist in the management of nurses and supervises and take appropriate actions in accordancewith the Trusts Human Resources Policies & Procedures.
  • To ensure clear lines of communication with the wider NDT, preceptors, team managers, clinical service leads, matrons and seniors nurses in the absence of the Senior Development Nurse.
  • To support the Nursing Development Team to ensure the completion of all data quality tasks.
  • To implement and contribute to policy and service development as appropriate.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to service development by taking an active part in the continuing provision of the service.
  • To maintain the database of Trust teaching staff to ensure the smooth delivery of developmentprogrammes inclusive of the band 5-6 workforce.
  • To act responsibly with regard to student and staff wellbeing, counsel and advise and refer when necessary, or to seek advice from the Senior Development Nurse if needed.
  • To take a lead role in the promotion, coaching and monitoring of nurse morale.
  • Maintain communication systems to enhance management processes within the Trust and respondto any difficulties related to this. Manage enquiries and complaints from clinical staff, newly qualified nurses, students and the HEI, in partnership with the HEI(s).
Professional
  • To maintain and improve own professional, clinical, managerial, knowledge and skills by promoting self-growth and development through in-service training programmes and other educational programme/materials as agreed by Head of Nursing.
  • To participate in nursing research and disseminate the knowledge and results from such research to colleagues.
  • To be fully conversant with legislation relevant to NMC requirements and student nurse practice.
  • To initiate/participate in developments and innovations within the Nurse Education Development Team
  • Support the Senior Development Nurse in identifying current and future practicedevelopment/learning needs for the post registered nursing workforce.
  • Monitor attendance to Practice Assessor updates.
  • Identify, and address, issues relating to student education in placement settings, maintaining animpartial view balancing the needs of the student and the mentor.
Training, Development and Education
  • Maintain knowledge of developments in Nurse Education and Training.
  • Support the implementation of NMC standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice.
  • Work in partnership with link tutors to undertake education audits and as necessary prepare placements for education audits.
  • Liaise with the HEI regarding curriculum changes and ensure that these changes are reported back to the Trust.
  • Assist Practice Assessors to interpret, utilise and complete student practice assessment documentation.
  • To work in partnership with the HEIs and Trust to manage the quality of placements available for pre-registration nursing students.
  • To actively promote and contribute to on-going educational programmes and reinforce a positive learning environment within teams.
  • To promote research and innovation within nursing practice, ensuring that teams are kept abreast of developments.
  • To undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy, identifying individualand team training needs.
  • To assist in provision of induction training to student nurses and all newly qualified nursing staff
  • To participate in the training and supervision of Student Nurses, if applicable, and act as a Practice Assessor.
  • To assist with student nurse support supervision programmes and ensure all staff are updated as on their occurrence.
  • During the year secondment to contribute and commit to undertaking a Development Review/appraisal.
  • To undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP).
