King's College Hospital is a large teaching hospital at the forefront of academic and nursing excellence. The Emergency Department (ED) is one of the busiest in London we see approximately 84,000 patients per year, including 28,000 children and young people (excluding patients streamed to Urgent Care).

Our newly refurbished Paediatric ED is located within the main department, staffed by registered paediatric nurses at all times. This area is supervised and supported by a Paediatric ED Matron, who works closely with the PDN team to ensure high quality care is delivered to our patients.

We are committed to developing our nursing staff and have strong links with local Higher Education Institutions. We offer a multitude of internally run courses, including Trauma Study Days, Paediatric Immediate Life Support, Paediatric Trauma Immediate Life Support and Plaster of Paris application.

We are looking for an experienced Paediatric Emergency Nurse who wishes to take up the challenge of becoming the Paediatric Practice Development Nurse (PDN) in this busy and diverse department. You will be part of a team of PDNs and Clinical Practice Facilitators, who are clinically focused, ensuring that our patients received the best care through delivering high quality teaching and encouraging staff development. You will be well supported by the ED Lead PDN and offered learning opportunities specific to your own developmental needs.

Main duties of the job To maintain primary responsibility for ensuring the Care Group provides a progressive learning environment for all grades of nursing staff.

To support and coordinate the development of Health Care Assistants, TNA's, NA's and both pre- and post-registration nursing students by co-ordinating educational activities and assessments of learning within the department.

To assist in the preparation of internationally educated nurses for their OSCE depending on specialist skills and area of expertise.

To support with statutory and mandatory training as required to ensure compliance within the Care Group and Trust wide (including, but not limited to PILS, EPLS, APLS, Manchester Triage)

To actively promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across the Care Group and Trust wide.
  • To provide effective role modelling and leadership by working clinically as per service and identified job plan clinical percentage.
To act as the education and training lead for the specialist area of practice.
  • To provide pastoral support, guidance and training to all stakeholders on all aspects of pre & post registration paediatric nursing.

  • To work in accordance with the NMC Code (2018), and Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and latest evidence based practice.
  • To work clinically in all allocated wards and departments, working in accordance with an identified urgent need, supporting individual Nurses, TNAs, NAs and HCAs in developing their practice, and in response to specific issues raised at care group risk and governance level, including learning from serious incidents.
  • To work within the 7 day service as required.
  • To produce written accounts of each episode of clinical facilitation, documenting learning achieved and areas for further development.
  • To demonstrate specialist nursing knowledge in clinical settings, and support the advancement of knowledge and skills using approved assessment procedures.
To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment.
  • To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for nurses and other staff.
  • To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions within the care group, ensuring effective communication at all times.
  • To maintain accurate records of training undertaken by each member of staff.
Education and Research
  • To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all nursing staff within the department, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments.
  • To develop and co-ordinate planned educational programmes (e.g. Paediatric Emergency Nursing Course, Paediatric Emergency Nursing Foundation Course) and opportunities for all multidisciplinary nursing staff within the care group.
  • To advise in relation educational opportunities and assist nurses in developing themselves in accordance with their personal development plan and/or appraisal objectives.
  • To support nursing staff in developing clinical competency around specified skills.
  • To create, sustain and support an environment where practice development and change can flourish.
  • To support supervisors, assessors and preceptors in their role, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised.
  • To promote research awareness by, disseminating appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area. To keep the Associate Director of Nursing for Workforce & Practice Development informed of any new nursing research proposals, and on the progress of research studies approved by the Trust R& D and Ethics Committees.
  • To work closely with HEI staff and the Associate Director of Nursing for Workforce & Practice Development in contributing to the development and review of speciality-related nursing courses, and in the evaluation of relevant courses in order to help inform Education Commissioning.
  • To work collaboratively with HEIs and other Trust colleagues on Education Quality Reviews in relation to the quality of the clinical learning environment.
Management
  • To manage own time to ensure balance between clinical and administrative activities.
  • To produce appropriate educational data or reports requested by management.
  • To lead in the process of ensuring multi-disciplinary training to meet specific initiatives.
  • To assist in the process of recruitment of nursing staff for the care group and in conjunction with colleagues, identify and implement educational strategies that support retention.

  • In conjunction with Senior Nursing colleagues identify and address the educational implications of audit findings and clinical incidents

  • To make an active contribution to clinical governance strategies, particularly in relation to producing and/or reviewing nurse-led clinical guidelines.

Person Specification Education and Qualification Essential
  • Education and Qualifications NMC Registered Children's Nurse (RNC)
  • Post-registration Children's Emergency Nursing Course
  • Post-registration mentorship/Practice Assessor/Supervisor qualification.
  • A clinical expert either through formal qualification (degree) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to Paediatric Emergency Care
Desirable
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education, or other formal teaching qualification.
  • Masters level study or willingness to work towards this.
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support/ European Paediatric Life Support Instructor
Knowledge and Experience Essential
  • Substantial experience within Paediatric Emergency Care, with proven clinical, management and leadership skills.
  • Current experience of teaching speciality specific subject matter.
Desirable
  • Experience of delivering postgraduate education (e.g. Emergency Nursing Course), and contributing towards quality assurance of such.
Skills Essential
  • Demonstrates commitment to high standards of patient care and service delivery
  • A genuine desire to be a learning facilitator with demonstrable enthusiasm for practice development.
