Job description

The post holder will support the NIHR funded study 'Outdoor Mobility after

Hip Fracture:
a feasibility randomised controlled trial'.

The trial includes researchers from Kings College London, University of Exeter (and Exeter Clinical Trials Unit), University of Nottingham, Warwick University, and the Patient and Public Involvement group 'TROOP'.

The trial will be delivered at four NHS Trusts across the UK.

The appointment will be at the grade of Research Assistant.

The postholder will be a researcher with a strong interest in clinical trials to improve current practice of rehabilitation for older adults.

The appointee will have a MSc (or equivalent experience) in health research.

The postholder will be supported to:

  • Complete baseline and follow up assessments via telephone/MS TEAMS with direct entry to REDCap for participants in the feasibility trial;
  • Support delivery and analysis of therapist focus groups to explore the acceptability and fidelity of the intervention;
  • Prepare materials for public and patient involvement, and colead public and patient involvement focus groups; and
  • Administrative duties including scheduling, preparing materials, and taking minutes for Trial Management Group, Trial Investigator Group, and Trial Steering and Data Monitoring Committee meetings; support the daytoday activities of the trial
  • Supporting preparation and dissemination of outputs from the programme.


On a day-to-day basis, the postholder will work with the co-Principal Investigators Prof Katie Sheehan, Visiting Professor of Rehabilitation, and Dr Emma Godfrey, Reader in Health Psychology.

The post holder will work closely with the interdisciplinary study team to produce at high quality and impactful publications. They will be supported to present the work at conferences.

They will be supported to establish a career plan and to complete development activities to help them to achieve their planned next step.

The post holder will complete the post with a solid foundation in the delivery of feasibility trials.

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract until February 2025.


This is a part-time post - 80% full time equivalent, with possibility of extending to full time, as funding allows.

Key responsibilities

A sound understanding of the feasibility trial protocol to enable efficient support of the Trial Management Group.

With senior oversight, support day-to-day activities of the feasibility trial

This will include:
preparing materials and taking minutes for relevant committees.

Identify and solve specific problems that arise (inclusive of protocols amendments) in collaboration with senior colleagues.


Execute study data collection (telephone/MS TEAM assessments of participants at up to four time points) with oversight from senior colleagues.

Support delivery and analysis of therapist focus groups to explore the acceptability and fidelity of the intervention.

Communicate methodologies and results clearly to lay colleagues both orally and in writing through leadership of PPI group.

Contribute to the writing and publication of high-quality papers in peer-reviewed literature, and study reports.

Contribute to the presentation of results at conferences nationally and internationally (as funding allows).


Liaise with colleagues within and external to King's and build networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.

Work effectively with clinical and non-clinical colleagues.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • MSc (or equivalent experience) in health research
  • Knowledge of the design and delivery of feasibility trials of intervention studies
  • Experience of working to standard operating procedures for research
  • Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, actively addressing areas of potential bias
Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working on the design and delivery of feasibility trials of intervention studies
