Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom Norfolk & Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust Full time

Job summary

We are a small team, commissioned by Norfolk and Waveney ICB to ensure young people in the region can get help if they are struggling with their sleep. We are looking for a new Assistant Psychologist to join us.

We have trained over 150 practitioners to date in delivering a sleep intervention (The Better Sleep Programme). We are implementing a series of online workshops to raise awareness of the role of sleep in youth mental health. As well as developing resources, we are also working alongside colleagues to support them in developing adaptations that will help more specialist clinical populations benefit from help with their sleep. In addition to this, we have great links with colleagues at UEA and are supporting several projects in this area. There would also be an opportunity for the postholder to hold a small clinical caseload.

The post offers an opportunity to develop clinical skills in a specialist area alongside developing practical research and service evaluation skills working as part of a wider implementation project. The role will involve liaising with clinicians across the wider youth mental health system, offering the post-holder an understanding of the context of mental health provision as well as experience in developing and delivering training at scale. We have strong links with the UEA DClinPsy course and the postholder would have opportunity to support both service-related projects and doctoral theses. Regular clinical supervision will be provided.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will support the psychologists/psychotherapists in the programme team in delivering training days, workshops and supervision groups (mostly online). They will provide peer support to trained practitioners starting to use the intervention and will be liaising with service user groups to promote service user involvement in the programme.

They will be providing support to specific adaptation projects in more specialist clinical populations such as young people in crisis or those with neurodevelopmental or learning difficulties by carrying out literature reviews, developing modified resources and supporting the evaluation of any adapted sleep interventions.

They will support the overall evaluation of the programme as we report on implementation and clinical outcomes and will have the opportunity to be involved in specific service evaluation and research studies.

The ideal candidate would have previous experience of working in mental health services, an interest in sleep (specialist training provided), a compassionate, respectful and inclusive stance toward service users and professional colleagues and an interest and skills in clinical research.

The post is remotely based with an in-person meeting in Norwich each month and the delivery of some in-person workshops in the Norfolk and Waveney region.

About us

We are a small, friendly and psychologically-minded team who are passionate about improving access to help for poor sleep. We aim to combine the flexibility of working remotely with a strong team ethos and really value our monthly in-person meetings. We are committed to developing and sharing our expertise in sleep and empowering others to take these ideas forward to improve their service offer. The rest of the team comprises a principal clinical psychologist (project lead), CBT therapist, assistant psychologists an undergraduate intern and a senior clinical team administrator. The post therefore comprises a core element of the team staff.

We pride ourselves on using evidence-based practice in our work and on collecting outcome data to generate our own practice-based evidence in order to promote learning, development and wider dissemination. We are part of the Children, Families and Young People's care group in NSFT and will be working with services working with young people (aged 14 to 25 years) both within NSFT and across the wider, integrated care system. We value learning in practice and are keen to include service-user perspectives more as we develop the project. We also have strong links with sleep research colleagues at UEA and are keen to support further learning and research on sleep and youth mental health.
