The Role

The core function of the GP lecturer (Wear region) is to recruit, monitor, supervise, train and support GP undergraduate teachers and practices in the Wear region.

You will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of GP educationalist at this exciting time of expansion of GP undergraduate teaching at Newcastle University.

The University has developed an Teaching and Scholarship Role Profiles document which summarises the range of activities that colleagues may be expected to perform.

This is a part time post (0.1 FTE) permanent position.

Key Accountabilities


• Accountable to the Board of Medical Studies through the Associate Subdean (Wear) and Subdean for Primary and Community Care (P&CC) and the Director of Medical Studies) to manage the delivery of the MBBS primary care teaching within the Regional Medical School to ensure equality of teaching, learning, assessment and support for all students which can be reviewed


• To know about the processes and delivery of primary care attachments, both within the relevant Trusts/LEPs and across the Regional Medical School, to ensure as far as possible the equity of student experience


• To help recruit and retain teaching practices, liaising with the local Trusts and Medical School as appropriate


• To help plan, organise and manage the attachments as necessary to ensure they remain fit for purpose

• To work effectively, and in partnership with a group of local teaching practices to ensure delivery of the attachment to the agreed learning outcomes, including dissemination of changes to the curriculum, and on-going discussion of evaluation data with teachers and practices, and ensuring appropriate action is taken


• To support these practices through regular contact, practice visits, and the provision of developmental opportunities such as observation of teaching, and to collect and collate data in relation to these activities


• To act as a point of reference for GP teachers, and when appropriate their students

• To contribute to the clinical assessment and professional assessment processes for GP attachments to ensure standardisation and uniformity across the Regional Medical School

• To contribute to relevant committees, regional GPL meetings, and the local Primary Care Annual Quality Monitoring Meeting. Also to liaise with local Trust leads and other Course Directors to ensure horizontal and vertical integration

• To contribute to setting up and running local and regional 'teaching the teachers' events


• To make a reasonable contribution, in consultation with the Sub-Dean for Primary and Community Care, to teaching and assessment and other curriculum processes (e.g. student selection) 'beyond' the actual GP attachments

• To act as a link with the local Trust lead with respect to problems arising during GP placements, and students about whom there is cause for concern as identified by GP teachers, and to liaise with the Sub-Dean and Associate Sub-Dean for P&CC, the Trust and the Medical Student Office to troubleshoot problems with placements, and to ensure appropriate support and guidance is available to identify and manage students in difficulty

• To contribute to review of relevant learning materials (such as Study Guides and Handbooks) within required timelines

• To demonstrate a commitment to developing relevant knowledge and skills in relation to teaching and curriculum management

• IT skills including experience of MS Office

Qualifications

• Holds an MBBS degree or equivalent

• Fully qualified (MRCGP) and currently practising GP with teaching experience

• Knowledge of the MBBS curriculum

Desirable

• Possesses a further teaching qualification, such as the Certificate in Medical Education, a Trainer's qualification, or a further degree
