The Role

Your research and teaching will focus on physical geography, and will complement and extend our existing research and teaching strengths in physical geography at Newcastle University. Your research will be recognised internationally within your field, and you will be an excellent teacher at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels in Geography. We welcome applicants whose work advances one or more of the following areas: environmental change, past environments and/or cryosphere.

This position is fixed term for one year (12 months) only and the purpose of the role is to cover for a colleague on parental leave during AY 24/5.

Key accountabilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Conduct and publish internationally recognised research in the sub-disciplinary area of physical geography
  • Contribute to our future submissions to the UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF)
  • Apply for external research funding, including collaborative applications with colleagues within Newcastle University or beyond
  • Engage with potential non-academic users and beneficiaries of your research
  • Participate in our research clusters, particularly Physical Geography
  • Contribute to, develop and extend teaching across our undergraduate and taught postgraduate Geography degree programmes
  • Become involved with postgraduate research student supervision when opportunities arise
  • Contribute to the administration of the Geography degree programmes and/or administration of other activities in Geography and the School of GPS
  • Provide academic guidance and pastoral support to personal tutees
  • Work in a collegial way, making a positive contribution to our collaborative and inclusive environment in which we value and support excellent research, teaching and impact
  • Take responsibility for your professional and career development with the support and encouragement of your colleagues

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A track record, commensurate with career stage, of published research within physical geography on environmental change, past environments and/or cryosphere
  • Research skills based on strong knowledge and understanding of a range of research methods, data sources, analytic techniques and methodologies
  • Experience of applying for research funding
  • Experience of engagement with non-academic research users and beneficiaries
  • Excellent teaching skills, including experience of teaching at Geography undergraduate level in physical geography on environmental change, past environments and/or cryosphere
  • Excellent knowledge of core teaching requirements in physical geography undergraduate programmes, including ability to teach research methodologies in Geography
  • Experience of lecturing, seminar teaching, assessment, field courses and dissertation supervision
  • Experience of providing academic guidance and pastoral care to undergraduate students

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching at taught postgraduate level
  • Experience of providing academic guidance and pastoral care to taught postgraduate students

Qualifications

  • A good first degree and PhD (completed or near completion) in Physical Geography or closely related discipline
