The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic academic with expertise in any area of Physics or Astrophysics. All staff are encouraged to use tested innovative teaching practices so there will be opportunities for peer observation in order to develop your own practice. We have undergraduate programmes in Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics.

We are committed to building a Physics environment with Equality and Diversity at its core. As such, the successful applicant will have a genuine interest and commitment to developing the role of under-represented groups in Physics. In addition, you will need to demonstrate the potential to be a strong role model for the values of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Applications are invited for a Lecturer within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics.

The post is offered as fixed-term for 12 months.

You will provide high quality teaching to undergraduate students within the School.

Key Accountabilities
You will be expected to:


• To take full responsibility as module leader for teaching specific courses as directed by the Head of School. This will include preparation of all materials, delivery of lectures and tutorials, and all assessment. The modules to be taken will be discussed with the Director of Discipline in Physics and might involve laboratory or computing practical's using Python

• To contribute to the teaching and assessment of other modules. This might include running computer practical's, and marking assignments and examinations

• To contribute to the School's recruitment and outreach activities as directed by the Director of Excellence in Learning and Teaching

• As a full member of the School, to participate in relevant School Committees such as Board of Examiners

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Lecturer Grade F

• Ability to teach and assess a range of physics courses autonomously

• Broad knowledge of physics as taught in Stage 1 of the Newcastle programmes in Physics

• Specialist knowledge of high-level material as taught at Stages 2-4 of the Newcastle BSc & MPhys degrees

• Willingness to assist with the administration of the School

Desirable

• Relevant teaching qualification

Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical)

• Evidence of analytical and problem-solving capability, with the relevant personal skills, initiative and drive

• The knowledge, ability and expertise to teach the relevant subject at undergraduate level

• Effective time management and prioritisation skills and the ability to meet deadlines

• Excellent communication skills

• Good interpersonal skills

Experience and Achievements (paid or unpaid)

• Demonstrable ability to effectively teach, support and supervise undergraduate and students

• Familiarity with teaching support tools, including virtual learning environments
