This role will see you providing support and guidance to project teams on all aspects of environmental management, meeting legal and company standards and helping deliver a culture of continual improvement.

You will also proactively support the Project Team to engage local community groups, supply chain and stakeholders by leading the projects social sustainability activities.

What you'll be doing

  • Contribute to the implementation of Sustainability Action Plans.
  • Manage project environmental and social risks and opportunities, developing and maintaining local environmental management and sustainability plans and risk assessments.
  • Actively lead environment and sustainability, engaging project teams to encourage and promote sustainable behaviours and innovations, deliver positive outcomes and maintain project documentation.
  • Provide environment and sustainability support and advice on environmental management, compliance and project specific mitigation measures including pollution control and ecology protection.
  • Upskill the project team and contractors on environment and sustainability responsibilities and controls via work package plans, toolbox talks and onsite learning and development.
  • Accurately record and report environment and sustainability data, best practices and lessons learnt.
  • Monitor and investigate environmental incidents, complaints and close call reporting. Ensure corrective actions are taken forward and support the business to implement controls to prevent repeat occurrence.
  • Undertake planned & unplanned inspections, audit and reviews of site activities, including facilitating external audits by clients and certification bodies.
  • Be involved at the planning stage to support design teams to identify and control risk and identify opportunities to reduce carbon and waste.
  • Identify and oversee ecological aspects and options for biodiversity.
  • Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management and sustainability.
  • Assist in the development and production of key performance indicators and management reports.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Strong knowledge of environment management.
  • Understanding of ecological matters and environmental law.
  • Full UK driver's licence and flexibility to travel.
  • Understanding of the rail/construction/engineering operating environment.
  • Literate in MS Office
  • Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Good interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Strong Organisational skills with robust and consistent record keeping.
  • Professional Membership level of a relevant professional body (IEMA/CIEEM/CIWEM)

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Good knowledge and practical experience of developing, implementing and improving EMS's certified to ISO 14001 accreditation.
  • Internal environmental auditor qualification.
  • Competent ecological surveyor for protected species.
  • Understanding of socioeconomics (socialvalue / socialperformance).
  • Demonstrable experience in the implementation of the waste hierarchy, Circular Economy principles and beneficial reuse.
