Derby, Derby, United Kingdom Derby Kids' Camp Full time

Becoming a Derby Kids' Camp volunteer is an opportunity to make an amazing difference to local young children - helping provide respite and a positive experience to children, aged 8-11, who are in need of a holiday.

We take children on our main campsite in Derbyshire where we have up to 70 children each week, supported by our amazing 35-40 volunteers We provide a range of experiences for children to participate in, such as; campfires, on-site sports and craft activities, swimming, river paddling, walking, going to an animal park farm, shopping, playing on an adventure playground, playing board games etc.

You can get stuck in with our children too

Most Summer camp roles will include:

  • Being a part of a group and working with those children during the activities (mini groups of 8-10 children with 3-4 volunteers in). You will get to know children very quickly and support them on camp as they may have never been away from home, making sure they have eaten and stay warm in their tent at night.
  • Support children with the activities on or off camp. Check they are safe throughout the activity, encouraging them to try new experiences, making sure they eat and drink, and supporting them to play alongside other children.
  • Specific role on camp
  • You will be asked to carry out a role (along with many other volunteers) to ensure the smooth running of camp. We have a range of roles and when you apply, you can specify your skills so we can best place you. Most of our new volunteers join the sports or craft team. This involves setting up the activities and running them (this is mostly selfled).
  • Supporting other volunteers throughout camp
  • Teamwork
makes the dream work We have other roles such as; medical team, first aiders, cooks, welfare, Safeguarding officers, bankers and photographers. You will need to ensure you work with other members of camp to enable this to run smoothly. 18+ volunteers will be required to complete at least 1 night shift (34 hours) in order to support children who may need it during the night Lastly, have fun with the Kids and enjoy the holiday too Remember, children are at the heart of everything we do.
What skills/attributes should I have? - Essential skills:

  • Teamwork
  • working as part of small groups and supporting the wider running of camp

Communication
  • Asking for support if required and passing on any health and safety/ safeguarding concerns (essential safeguarding training will be provided)
  • Following code of conduct
  • Ensuring you conduct yourself in a professional manner and understand the importance of working with children

Mobility
  • This can be an active and demanding role, there is lots of walking along hillsides and uneven surfaces

Enthusiasm
  • The passion to work with children who may be nervous, sceptical and need lots of encouragement

Sleep
  • The ability to sleep in a tent
  • Age: 16+ (we have a small number of roles for 1617 year olds but these do fill up fast)

What skills/attributes should I have? - Desirable

  • Experience with children
  • Thorough understanding of safeguarding
  • Leadership
  • Wider skills e.g. in medicine, education, photography, cooking etc (to support some of the other job roles)
  • Age: 18+

What we will provide:

  • Training Day
  • We will answer all of your questions, show you what camp looks like and how it runs to give you all of the essential information prior to camp

Safeguarding
  • Level 1 training
  • You will be given access to an external course so you can understand the basics of keeping children safe and reporting concerns
  • A wealth of knowledge from our returning volunteers plenty of people return each year, who will be more than happy to show you how camp works, so don't worry about not knowing what to do
  • Food We will cook delicious meals, so no need to worry about being fed for the week
