Oxford Centre for Respiratory Medicine( Osler Respiratory Unit ) based in John Radcliffe Hospital currently has positions available for Band 5 staff nurses who are interested in further developing their respiratory skills.
The in-patient ward clients include those requiring treatment for COPD, Asthma, CF/Bronchiectasis, pleural diseases, Interstitial lung disease, High flow oxygen, chest drain, non-invasive ventilation (NIV/CPAP) and tracheostomy. We also receive High Level care patients.

This is a specialist Ward that looks after patients requiring treatment for COPD, Asthma, CF/Bronchiectasis, ILD, Pleural diseases and other Complex Respiratory Conditions. Ward specializes on managing patients on non-invasive ventilation (NIV/CPAP), Chest drain management, patients on High Flow Nasal Oxygen and tracheostomy. We also receive High Level care patients. - Registered Nurse (Part or 15 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register depending on area of practice) or National Certification in area of Practice
- UK recognised Degree in Nursing relevant to post
- Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of an NMC revalidation or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years acute care registered nurse experience.
- Evidence of achievement of a Nursing and Midwifery, (NMC) approved Mentorship qualification.
- Post-graduate qualification related to an area of practice.
- Articulate and knowledgeable of skills needed to deliver a high standard of care in the area of practice.
- Able to work under own initiative within boundaries of role
- Demonstrates awareness of importance of working as part of a team.
- Able to document observations, results, decisions and actions etc. effectively in patient's notes and communicate these effectively to appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Able to communicate effectively with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Able to proactively contribute to the education of learners and non-registered and less experienced staff.
- Demonstrates ability to manage, direct and evaluate the nursing care for a defined caseload of patients.
- Competent to administer intravenous medicines
- Competent in central venous access management
- Excellent communication skills.
- Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate
- Demonstrates ability to maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with their line manager.
- Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust's values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.
- Able to supervise Foundation nurses, non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective care delivery.
- Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
- Previous experience of managing clinical incidents and complaints.
