JOB PURPOSE:


To support the achievement of the UK Power Networks (UKPN) strategic business objectives through productive and effective employee and Trade Union relationships.

The role provides specialist lead Employee Relations (ER) support to all UKPN collective agreement negotiations and consultations and in particular, the annual pay negotiations.

The outcome of all such consultations and negotiations has a significant impact on UKPN operational performance and financial results.


The jobholder is also responsible for contributing to the development of an appropriate strategy to engage with the Company's personal contract holders.


With around 90% of the staff covered by the collective agreements an effective trade union relationship is essential, and the role requires managing complex and challenging ER issues.


The role is a key position in the Human Resources Directorate and as part of the Senior Management Team, the jobholder is required to contribute to and add value to Company and Directorate strategic and operational matters.


Leading a small specialist team, the job role has a direct input into the HR Strategy supporting the business objectives.

It also plays a key role in supporting the delivery, through effective employee relations aspects of essential business change projects.

The post holder is a reference point for the HR Directorate in any employment disputes and is required to give specialist advice to both those within HR and Senior Managers with regard to collective agreements.

On occasions, the post holder may deputise for the Director of HR.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:


Supporting and advising line managers as the ER lead on all pay, terms and conditions negotiations across the Business units, proactively pre-empting any issues and addressing as required.

The drafting and delivery of "fit for purpose" collective agreements and HR policies to support the achievement of business objectives

Proactively assessing the people impact of change proposals and leading on the appropriate collective consultation

Lead on the UKPN Consultation on Change with Trade Unions, across the different negotiating and consultation forums. This includes membership of steering groups on business change projects

Working with the Employee Engagement Team to improve and deliver the targeted UKPN Employee Engagement scores


Providing advice to the HR Director on ER matters and ensuring consistency and compliance with the Company agreements and HR policies.

Management of the ER machinery within UKPN.

Manage productively the strategic and day-to-day TU relationships for UKPN.

Development of the People Strategy as part of HR Senior Management Team.


Supporting the negotiating of changes to terms and conditions with line managers in line with the agreed strategy at the time, ensuring compliance and avoidance of ER issues.

Lead role in design of HR projects as assigned by the HRD.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:


As the role operates in a collective agreement and complex employee relations environment covering both regulated and commercial activities significant experience in working with trade unions is essential.


The role requires the effective building and managing of key stakeholder relationships including members of the Executive, Senior Line Managers, employees and Full Time Trade Union Officers.

Together with the HR Senior Management Team, the role will contribute to the achievement of business change. The role therefore requires effective persuading and influencing skills and determination to achieve results.


The post holder will need a sound understanding of the processes of Negotiation, Consultation and Mediation together with the ability to think strategically with commercial acumen.

The post holder must be able to build credibility and trust with a range of key stakeholders.

The ability to balance commercial needs with pragmatic fit for purpose ER solutions in often-complex scenarios is necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPEREINCE:

Ideally, a graduate with Chartered membership of the CIPD and a proven record of operating successfully at senior management level within a collective agreement and challenging employee r
