Green Cat Hydrogen Limited, Job Advertisement – Energy Systems Modelling Engineer

Job Title: Energy Systems Modelling Engineer

Term: Full time employment

Salary: On application and dependent on experience

Location: Glasgow (80 St Vincent Street) or Edinburgh (Stobo House, Midlothian Innovation Centre, Roslin) with travel expected to site, as required.

The Company:

Green Cat Hydrogen Limited (GCH) is a dynamic and innovative green hydrogen project developer. GCH focus on the deployment of electrolytic hydrogen projects as a key part of the global energy transition and de-carbonisation strategy. The business works closely with sister companies through the planning, permitting/licensing, engineering and design and construction of green hydrogen projects.

Our growing team offers a dynamic and supportive work environment, with broad exposure across the business and scope for career progression.

The Role:

  • The primary responsibility of the role is developing and updating our in-house modelling capabilities in a wide variety of areas, from energy market analysis to development of engineering models with subject experts.
  • Given the technical nature of these quantitative tasks it is essential that candidates have experience of modelling real world phenomena in code, ideally covering topics such as energy networks, renewables, grids, manufacturing, etc.
  • In this role you could find yourself working on tasks that require developing a fundamental understanding of the hydrogen industry and energy system, then applying strong problem-solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team to solve complex real-world problems, while also being able to independently present and drive initiatives forward.

The Candidate must have:

  • Minimum Bachelor's (or equivalent level) degree, with a greater portfolio of work required by less qualified candidates to demonstrate technical competence.
  • 2-7 years in software engineering/working in a quantitative role in the energy industry.
  • Python Programming Skills: Candidates should have a strong proficiency in Python, as they will be responsible for simulation modelling. They should be able to write clean, efficient, and maintainable Python code.
  • Simulation Modelling Skills: Experience with simulation modelling tools and libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, or SimPy is essential. Candidates should be able to create, implement, and analyse simulation models with subject matter expert input to solve complex problems related to renewable energy systems.
  • Simulation Modelling Skills should include ability to create adequate simulation environment for simulation models (e.g., process or energy system models).
  • Data Manipulation Skills: Candidates should have experience handling complex datasets of various formats, including sourcing, processing, and standardizing them as part of an overall data pipeline to feed into energy systems models.
  • Microsoft Excel: Candidates should feel comfortable with Excel in order to process datasets and export modelling results for analysis by the broader team.
  • Strong organisational and multitasking skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both for collaborating with team members and for potentially explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A growth mindset, being adaptable and willing to take on a variety of tasks, extending capabilities across pure coding tasks.
  • Great team working skills and a desire to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • The right to work in the United Kingdom, full-time, in perpetuity.

The Candidate would benefit from:

  • Renewable Energy Knowledge: While not mandatory, candidates with knowledge of renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, or hydropower, may have an advantage in understanding and developing in-house models and tools.
  • Energy System Knowledge, such as an understanding of power flows, demand and supply and the sourcing and implementation of these datasets for modelling is highly advantageous.
  • Financial Modelling Knowledge: Candidates would benefit from being able to translate energy systems simulation outputs into readily usable financial models to evaluate the potential returns and risks of different projects quantitatively, presenting them in a readily digestible format for other members of the team.
  • Web Development: Experience with common web development frameworks such as Django or Flask, is a plus.
  • Data Analysis and Visualization: Proficiency in data analysis tools like Pandas and data visualization libraries like Matplotlib or Plotly can be valuable, especially in the context of renewable energy data analysis.
  • Ability to create and maintain GUI would be a highly beneficial skill for the position.
  • Portfolio or Project Experience: We encourage candidates to showcase relevant projects or simulations they have worked on, especially if they have experience in the renewable energy sector.
  • Ability to work independently and set own targets, while being part of a broader team.

The employment package:

  • Competitive salary, negotiated depending on qualifications, experience, and skills.
  • Private Medical Healthcare
  • 25 Days annual leave and 8 flexible bank holidays
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Professional development opportunities and support.
  • Professional fees paid for by the company.
  • Company social events and team building days.
  • On-site parking with EV charging points available to staff.
  • Flexible working opportunities

Please submit your application including:

  • Cover Letter (no page limit); and,
  • CV (maximum 3 pages),
  • GitHub account/work portfolio.

We will only be able to contact those applicants who have been selected for interviews. GCH reserve the right to close this posting early if the right candidate is identified.

Thank you for your interest and consideration.
