Belfast, United Kingdom Queen's University Belfast Full time

The School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics (HAPP) at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to recruit a talented Professor of International Relations.

The School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy, and Politics (HAPP) at Queen’s University, Belfast, is one of the UK's leaders in internationally recognised research and teaching in Politics and International Relations (IR). The School seeks to appoint a Full Professor to develop research, teaching, and leadership in the field of IR.

IR is an area of growing strength in our School. We conceive of IR as an intellectual space that is transforming itself in the face of global challenges that both trouble and exceed familiar disciplinary conventions. These challenges include, but are not limited to: irreversible climate breakdown; the rise of global pandemics; new forms of capitalist extraction; increased reliance on technological and algorithmic governance; the collapse and remaking of global financial institutions; the imperatives of decolonialisation; the interlocking dilemmas of security, mobility, and liberty; transforming contexts for protest and resistance; the messy aftermath of entrenched conflict; and the blurring of war, policing, and occupation, all within a context of faltering global governance and multilateral cooperation. As we critically interrogate such ongoing upheavals, we seek to appoint a leading global scholar committed to pushing the boundaries of IR, to join us as we consolidate, develop, and amplify our research and teaching.

The IR collective in HAPP consists of open-minded, ambitious, and curious scholars who seek to push disciplinary boundaries. We value research that is theoretically robust, empirically rich, and draws on the latest methodological debates in the field. We are looking for a leader in the field of IR whose research and teaching challenge received epistemological orientations in the discipline, and who is committed to analysing the global challenges we face. The successful candidate will bring leadership experience to the role, demonstrate an established track record of high-quality research and teaching, and be committed to driving research innovation and project development.

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following criteria:

  • A PhD in International Relations.
  • Sustained publication record of outputs of world-leading quality that fully demonstrates a formative and lasting contribution to the field.
  • Sustained record of securing and enabling large-scale research funding, awarded through competitive external peer-review processes and a sustained record of successful delivery of such funded projects, including the management of financial and human resources.
  • Recognised excellence and reputation in International Relations – research internationally acknowledged as world-leading.
  • Evidence of ability to teach and assess core modules in International Relations at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Substantial and significant experience of providing academic leadership at a strategic level in Higher Education.

Please note the above are not an exhaustive list. For further information about the role including the essential and desirable criteria, please visit our website.
