The post holder will provide support to the Operational Manager (TRU), taking technical and managerial responsibility for routine and advanced interpretive investigations in all aspects of the diagnostic serology service, and in ensuring the department meets or exceeds standards of service delivery as defined by the laboratory quality management system. The post holder will be expected to participate in all rotas to ensure service continuity of the department. The post holder will participate in out of hours, extended working day, Bank holiday and weekend patterns.

The post holder will practise as an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist and will work as part of the wider laboratory team, rotating through the department and providing cover for senior colleagues when necessary and liaising with medical staff, other laboratory staff, hospital / Trust staff, customers and members of the public as appropriate.

PHW Swansea is part of an all-Wales Microbiology network that provides support for Health Protection across Wales. As such we could be required at short notice to respond to public health emergencies, including outbreaks and other emergency situations

Main duties of the job

The post holder will supervise and participate in all aspects of specimen processing, undertaking routine and advanced microbiological interpretive investigations in all aspects of Toxoplasma Reference laboratory diagnosis. They will validate and authorise laboratory reports and resolve associated problems as necessary. They will also be responsible for the transmission of laboratory test results (paper, electronic, verbally), including provision of telephoned urgent results and associated specialist advice relating to appropriateness of samples and investigation requests.

They will participate in quality audits, ensuring maintenance and compliance of the quality management system and contribute to service development through participation in research, evaluation of laboratory methods / equipment and implementation of new techniques.

The post holder will also participate in external and internal quality assurance, including evaluation of quality controls, monitoring performance and implementing corrective action where necessary.
