Research Assistant in Malaria Vaccine Genetics

We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant in Malaria Vaccine Genetics, to join the Centre for Human Genetics as part of a long-standing collaboration between the research groups of Alexander Mentzer (Infection Immunogenetics) and Gavin Band (Statistical Genomics) to develop and implement a high-throughput pipeline to sequence malaria parasite genomes using next-generation sequencing technology, and apply it to analyse thousands of Plasmodium falciparum infections.

You will be responsible for implementing a range of molecular biology tasks, according to standard protocols, ranging from simple assays (DNA extraction, sample quantitation and PCR) to more complex tasks either manually and/or with the assistance of automation. You will develop and maintain sample logistics. This will include responsibilities for establishing, cataloguing and maintaining a database of large DNA sample collections, keeping accurate daily records of experiments on tracking sheets, electronic lab books or LIMS as appropriate, and other tasks including updating SOPs where necessary. Other responsibilities will include the daily housekeeping of the laboratory area and performing tasks including solution preparation, stock control of laboratory consumables, and collecting goods from stores, and the biological safety of the laboratory, ensuring that all work is conducted safely and using appropriate safety procedures, and in the dedicated areas.

It is essential that you hold BSc degree or equivalent in biological sciences, molecular biology, human genetics, immunogenetics or a closely related field. Knowledge in molecular and cellular biology, genomics and –omics technologies, and the ability to perform large-scale sample handling, implement molecular biology assays, and record results in an efficient and accurate manner is essential for this role. You will be able to follow protocols for existing and new laboratory techniques, and apply them to a high standard. Experience of genomic data analysis using R or python, and/or a strong desire to develop skills in this area is highly desirable.
