The team

Natural England Cumbria Area Team is seeking a Senior Reserve Manager to join the South Cumbria Area Team as part of its National Nature Reserve (NNR) group of staff. Our National Nature Reserves (NNRs) are at the forefront of nature recovery and people engagement and are at the heart of achieving Natural England’s ambitions (such as Local Nature Recovery, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), NNR strategy etc.). This role is fundamental to the delivery of the NNR Management plans and the ambitions of NNRs, providing key operational delivery on the reserves, thereby ensuring the NNR series can achieve its role in delivering the Government’s ambitious 25-year plan.

  • Duddon Mosses
  • Gaitbarrows
  • Great Asby
  • Hallsenna
  • Roudsea
  • North Walney

   
The post will be based at Natural England’s Kendal office and will require some weekend, public holiday and evening work.

Job description

Provides strategic and thought leadership to deliver Natural England ambitions and drive the NNR / NRN agendas, within or across clusters of reserves on a landscape scale. Develops and oversees strategic and operational delivery plans for NNR group(s) - exact scope and geography is likely to vary locally/where there are priority places etc. Pursues and maintains
external partnerships to achieve and develop ambitions. Provides functional (and /or line) management to staff. Responsible for own Health & Safety and that of staff on reserve(s), visitors, volunteers, contractors etc. within their NNR group. Engages with wider organisation across Programmes and Directorates helping to shape policy and future direction for NNRs.

This role is responsible for delivering high value and/or strategically complex work programmes on NNR(s), dealing with challenging or complex external issues (e.g. with partners). The role also deals with staff performance/welfare issues.

  • Strong working knowledge of applied conservation and land management practices (Essential).
  • Natural history skills, including experience and competency of identifying biodiversity features e.g. plant i.d. (Essential)
  • Experience of managing the health and safety of those undertaking practical habitat management (Essential)
  • Competent IT skills, use of MS Office and social media. Knowledge of GI mapping skills and Conservation Management System (CMSi) will be an advantage (Desirable)
