Job Purpose: 

Working in a modern, purpose built facility, the role is essential in ensuring that Pembrokeshire County Council remains a leading Local Authority in delivering waste operations in the UK. Responsible to the Waste Transfer Station supervisor, undertake a range of duties, in a team environment, connected with the collection and disposal of waste and recycling from across the County. Operatives will perform in a number of capacities including, operating/monitoring vehicles and machinery, ensure waste is sorted, processed and stored in correct recycling streams and conduct maintenance and safety procedures. Ensure Waste Transfer Station areas are kept up to the highest Safety and Environmental standards.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

To drive and operate vehicles and equipment as required in accordance with the valid licence, instructions and training for that vehicle / equipment / Baler.

To drive, operate and marshal vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and compliant loading and unloading of recycling and waste materials in accordance with policy, procedures, training and legal requirements.

The identification, removal and sorting of contaminates from the designated bays and containers.

To perform picking duties on conveyor assembly by manually intercepting and removing reject materials from mixed plastics and cans inputs using aids provided and deposit rejected materials into the correct reject chute.

Operation of the weighbridge system recording all vehicles entering / leaving the site in accordance with the Duty of Care regulations, waste carrier licences, recording weights and waste type by vehicle and completion of required paperwork such as issuing weighbridge tickets and daily and weekly reports.

To maintain and enforce compliance with all aspects of health, safety and other legislation, including environmental health factors.

Liaising with the hauliers in relation to collections and time managing the situation not to obstruct daily operations of materials coming into site.

To carry out simple maintenance and preventative tasks on machinery and plant following Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Works.

To conduct daily and weekly vehicle, plant and equipment checks and tests to identify defects and ensure safety systems are operational, including fire suppression system and drainage systems.

Assist with the general administrative duties and customer service, including cleansing and housekeeping of all site and welfare facilities.

To undertake any training / instruction required to carry out these duties and/or deemed necessary to fulfil the role.

Carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grade and level

of responsibility of the post and assist the supervisor with the day to day running of site operations.
