Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

This exciting opportunity funded by Cancer Research UK is based within the Optics and Photonics Research Group (OPG) at the Faculty of Engineering (FoE), the BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) and the Centre for Cancer Sciences at the University of Nottingham (UoN). These conduct cutting-edge research into the development of technology for biomedical applications.

Vision

We are seeking a UK national PhD student who is motivated, curious and passionate about scientific research. Together we will make technological advances in cancer research that can make a difference in the way the cancer is diagnosed or even treated.

Motivation

The prognosis of cancer is an extremely challenging task. Treatments often deliver a different outcome on similar patients. Currently, there is a major global push to develop technologies that allow the inclusion of a larger and wider range of biomarkers. These are key to ensuring treatments are appropriate for patients. One potential biomarker is given by the mechanical properties of cells and tissue, however these remain largely uncharacterised in the clinic.

Aim

The project aims to demonstrate the existence, relevancy and applicability of mechanical biomarkers in the determination of the state and progression of cancer cells by the use of artificial intelligence, novel imaging, and endoscopy techniques. A candidate will work with experts in cancer, microscopy and computer science to deliver new insights into the mechanical properties of cancer and their relationship with disease progression.

Who we are looking for

An enthusiastic, self-motivated, resourceful candidate with a 1st or 2:1 in Engineering or Physics or Biology. Programming and signal processing are fundamental skills to undertake the project however experience in optics, ultrasonics and or cancer cell culture will be also beneficial. The project will take place at the University Park campus and will provide an excellent platform for career development, travel and publication.

Funding support

Funding for this opportunity is for UK nationals. The funding covers both tuition and stipend for 4 years at the CRUK PhD rates. The University of Nottingham actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.

Environment

The Faculty of Engineering provides a thriving working environment for all postgraduate students (PGRs) creating a strong sense of community across research disciplines. Community and research culture is important to our PGRs and the FoE supports this by working closely with our Postgraduate Research Society (PGES) and our PGRs Research Group Reps to enhance the research environment for PGRs. PGRs benefit from training through the Researcher Academy’s Training Programme, those based within the Faculty of Engineering have access to bespoke courses including sessions on paper writing, networking and career development after the PhD. The Faculty has outstanding facilities and works in partnership with leading industrial partners.

Ball bearings and roller bearings play crucial roles in most rotating machines. Their design and selection involves a complex mix of considerations including component life under normal running conditions, power losses, vibrations in the machine and the ability to carry exceptional loads when/if these loads come to exist. These bearings, collectively...
