Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

Job Description:

The University of Nottingham is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to work on a project focused on advanced rotor-stator interactions through bearings. This project aims to develop a generic representation for bearings that can be used in advanced engine simulations, with attributes such as computational speed, ease of parameter estimation, and high fidelity to actual behavior.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a generic representation for bearings using an AI framework or direct parametrisation
  • Characterise specific bearing configurations through a small set of tests
  • Interpolate between characterised bearing configurations to make high-quality approximations for bearings with no experimental data
  • Collaborate with the research group and industry partners to ensure the representation meets the needs of advanced engine simulations

Requirements:

  • Full residency in the UK or Ireland
  • Strong background in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field
  • Excellent programming skills and experience with AI frameworks
  • Good communication and teamwork skills

About the University:

The University of Nottingham is a world-leading research-intensive university with a strong reputation for innovation and collaboration. The Mechanical and Aerospace Systems research group has a long history of hosting the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Transmission Systems and has a strong track record of producing high-quality research.

Funding:

The studentship is funded through the Industrial CASE scheme, providing a stipend of £21,237 per annum and tuition fees. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with industry experts and academics to develop their skills and knowledge.
