Serco is contracted to provide Total Facilities Management to the Defence Academy of the UK (DA). This prestigious establishment is responsible for post-graduate education and most of the command, staff, leadership, Defence management, acquisition, and technology training for members of the UK Armed Forces and MOD Civil Servants. Serco supports the DA as the MOD's primary link with UK universities and international military educational institutions.

 

Serco have a role as a Postal Services Operative. You will help to sort, deliver, and collect all items of mail in accordance with Joint Service Publication 367 and Serco Operating procedures in support of Shrivenham Station and Serco departmental activities.  You will also be an active member of a flexible team providing an efficient mail service to the Defence Academy.

 

 

Key Accountabilities:

 

  • As directed by the Senior Stores Supervisor and Lead Postal Services Operative, take responsibility for the internal and external secure distribution and collection arrangements for all mail including:
    • Protectively Marked mail.
    • Defence Courier mail.
    • Special Delivery and/or Recorded Mail.
  • Be responsible for the sorting of incoming mail, both from internal and external sources, and the distribution of mail into the appropriate pigeonholes.
  • Proficient in the use of all Post Room Equipment.
  • Exercise care and security of equipment issued to the Post Room.
  • Assist with the franking process of outgoing mail, if required.
  • Delivery and collection of internal mailbags on foot or by vehicle depending on the particular round.
  • Delivery and collection of parcels and larger items between rounds as required.
  • Delivery of priority items and obtaining signatures for same.
  • Delivery of security pouches containing protectively marked documents and obtaining signatures for same.
  • As appropriate, be available to cover for other postal staff during their absence on leave or illness.  
  • Compliance with, and implementation of, SHEF procedures and training.
  • Ensure that the Post Room is well maintained, safe and professional in appearance.
  • Any other tasks as directed by the Lead Postal Services Operative, Senior Stores Supervisor or Head of Logistics.

 

 

What you’ll need to do the role:

  • Good level of general education, with GCSE’s (A-C) or equivalent in English.
  • Clean UK Driving License
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous experience in a Customer Service facing role.
  • Previous Administration and or Post Room Experience.
  • Knowledge / understanding of general office practices.
  • PC literate, with experience in MS Outlook.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Ability to proactively manage own workload.
  • Flexibility and a positive attitude toward teamwork and a commitment to contributing toward the achievement of team goals.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
