Swindon, United Kingdom Zurich Insurance Company Ltd. Full time

Closing Date: Friday 19th July

Start Date: September 2024

Salary: A competitive starting salary of £21,840 for the apprenticeship role and £32,550 for the graduate role, in addition to a study package, including paid study days

The opportunity:

We are recruiting for several entry level roles as Actuarial apprentices or Actuarial graduates to join our UK Life Actuarial team. You will use your numerical, team-working, communication, and interpersonal skills while working on life, health, pension, and investment products. This could include pricing new or existing products, providing actuarial support for group-wide projects, financial risk management, modelling, reserving and financial reporting.

The UK Life Actuarial team are responsible for the monitoring, reporting, forecasting and longer term business planning for Zurich’s UK Life business and provide insights into the strategy and performance of the company. The team work in close collaboration with other finance and business areas as well as the Global Corporate Centre teams.

At Zurich we’re interested in hiring candidates with high potential. There’s no requirement to have specific knowledge of actuarial work, finance, or insurance beyond the motivation and knowledge that it is the career you wish to follow. We find that the best future actuaries are those with an analytical and logical mindset, who are adaptable to change, enjoy mathematical challenges, and have an eye for detail.

In this role you will learn, and be rewarded for doing so, whilst working with actuarial students and qualified actuaries on a variety of tasks. Zurich will support you in completing the Level 4 Actuarial Technical Apprenticeship with BPP Professional Education if doing the apprenticeship, or with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries exams if joining us as a graduate, covering the associated costs and giving paid study days. We are serious about investing in our people. We run a mentoring scheme to help guide you through your early experiences and give you advice with structuring your exam and revision time. Working in a team alongside qualified actuaries will give you the best professional experience and we always encourage questions because the best students seek to understand what it is they are doing and why they are doing it.

Many of our employees work flexibly in a variety of different ways, including part-time, flexible hours, job share, an element of working from home or compressed hours. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you may need.

What will you be doing?

You will be working in an actuarial role from day one, gaining experience working alongside a team of actuaries. During your time as an actuarial technician, you will rotate between teams to gain a great understanding of the breadth of actuarial work and how each team contributes to great customer protection and outcomes.

Throughout your training you will develop a variety of actuarial skills, such as:

  • analysing data using actuarial software and programming languages;
  • projecting financial results (profit and solvency) using expert actuarial judgements;
  • communicating your results to key stakeholders to inform business decisions;
  • continuously improving our processes including use of new technologies such as predictive analytics; and
  • analysing the business’ exposure to risks.

What are we looking for?

The key skills you will require for this role include:

  • Strong IT skills, knowledge of Excel is preferable (but not essential)
  • Comfortable with maths and a logical mindset
  • Appetite to learn
  • Ability to communicate
  • Effective personal planning and organisation
  • Able to build effective personal relationships

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Apprentice role: A-Level (or equivalent) in Mathematics at Grade B or above and a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 including Maths and English Language
  • Graduate role: a minimum 2:1 degree in a numerate discipline (achieved or expected); and at least 128 UCAS points in three A-levels including an A in Maths
  • A professional attitude and a positive approach to your work

What happens next?

As an inclusive employer we want to ensure that all candidates feel comfortable and are able to perform at their best during the interview. You’ll have the opportunity to let us know of any reasonable adjustment or practical support needed when you apply.
