Job Description

Overview:

Takeda is a global top 10 Japanese healthcare company. The External Affairs (EA) team is comprised of communications/patient advocacy, public affairs and events. The EA team is a high performing, multi award winning function, recently winning the 'In-house team of the year' award at Communique 2020. The External Affairs team provides strategic guidance and tactical implantation across five therapy areas, as well as delivering corporate and internal objectives. The team is very well placed in the organisation and leads high profile cross-company projects.

Job Function: To plan and deliver Takeda UK and Ireland Communications and Patient Advocacy plans, for both internal and external communications audiences. This includes:

  • The creation and execution of communication strategies that drive key business objectives and promote the company's vision, reputation and brand to key stakeholders.
  • Delivering patient-centred programmes, events and initiatives through patient advocacy; lead engagement with relevant professional and patient advocacy organisations.
  • Driving continued employee engagement in order to support the achievement of business objectives and share best practice (via Yammer, Town Halls and Internal Newsletters etc.)
  • Establishing Takeda's leadership within its key therapy areas, scientific expertise, organizational culture, and corporate priorities.
  • Mitigating risk and influence the external environment by nurturing collaborative partnerships with key external stakeholders, including media, industry organisations, professional groups, patient groups, politicians and officials.
  • Supporting all facets of the business to maintain the integrity of the corporate brand and ensuring all usage of the brand (whether external or internal) complies with company guidelines.
  • Identifying and executing opportunities to generate awareness of priority brands with key audiences (e.g. regulatory milestones).
  • Ensuring alignment of all Takeda UK and Ireland communications activity with regional (EUCAN) and global objectives and initiatives.

Overall Accountability / Objectives

Brand Communications and patient advocacy (70%)

You will be responsible for:

  • Driving understanding and awareness of the science behind our brands and therapy areas to nominated key stakeholders and external audiences.
  • Ensuring that the reputation of Takeda UK and Ireland and its products is protected and enhanced through communications projects, effective issues management and media relations.
  • Providing strategic and tactical support to Business Unit Directors to help realise all opportunities to raise awareness of priority brands/therapy areas.
  • Build relationships with key patient groups, and groups of patients, by understanding their needs and developing strategies and programmes that will support them in achieving their objectives in order to build long lasting, trusting relationships.
  • Building relationships with key media, both traditional and social, and becoming the communications partner of choice for key journalists and commentators.
  • Bringing the patient voice within Takeda in order to allow colleagues from all functions to understand and embed the patient perspective in all decisions.
  • Ensuring that all Takeda interactions with patient organisations, media and other relevant stakeholders are in full compliance with laws and regulations and reflects Takeda ethical principles and corporate philosophy.

Internal and Corporate Communications (30% approx.)

You will be responsible for:

  • Engaging and motivating employees to support business objectives.
  • Developing compelling content to support change communications for the transformation / roadmap, inspiring mindset-change and new culture. Takeda is at an exciting period of its history, and communications will play a huge part in how the company is perceived both internally and externally.
  • Developing creative internal communication programmes informing employees of important company and brand-related news.
  • Collaborating with HR on employee engagement activities.
  • Collaborating with the Digital lead on communications channels.
  • Supporting all employee meetings and community initiatives.
  • Reinforcing the company's values in all internal communications.

General

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the delivery of any regional (EUCAN) or global communications objectives and initiatives. Help to ensure UK strategies are in line with Global & EUCAN strategy and that Global and EUCAN wide resources and ideas can, where appropriate be implemented in the UK.

Requirements

We are looking an excellent communicator with a combination of the following competencies and experience:

  • A passion and drive for communicating science and preferably health issues in engaging and novel ways, that get demonstrable cut through with key target audiences.
  • Extensive experience in a science, healthcare or pharmaceutical communications environment either agency or in-house. Graduate Degree level qualification (mandatory). Public Affairs experience and/or Masters level qualification in Communications/ Public Policy either as modules as part of graduate studies, or via professional bodies since working (desired).
  • Demonstrable success/experience in implementing corporate awareness and positioning initiatives both internally and externally within an highly regulated industry, ideally in the life sciences sector, and utilizing media, digital, print channels.
  • Understanding and experience of integrating opportunities presented by digital and social media platforms into wider communications strategy.
  • Expertise in managing the corporate relationship with key external groups: ideally patient advocacy groups, and professional associations or policy groups an advantage.
  • Expertise in managing media enquiries, and running a press office an advantage.
  • Ability to forge relationships with consumer, trade, specialist and local media/journalists, to build and maintain networks, and consider how to develop relationships for mutual benefit.
  • Experience of delivering patient-centred campaigns, including familiarity with compliance process.
  • Experience of liaising with marketing colleagues to provide communications expertise that supports their commercial objectives.
  • Understanding the complexities and issues relating to operating in the global, and ideally UK pharmaceutical industry, including being well-versed in the ABPI Code of Practice.
  • Experience of complying to corporate brand guidelines and recognizing the importance of protecting and enhancing an organisation's corporate reputation.
  • Experience of internal communications programmes including motiving employees.
  • Experience of writing copy for newsletters, magazines, briefings and overseeing production including design and print.
  • Event management experience.
  • Experience managing relationship with external agencies and suppliers.
  • Fluency in English (mandatory).
  • Experience in providing counsel for, and gaining alignment with, internal and external colleagues (preferable).
  • Established and proven stakeholder networking capabilities (mandatory).

The role holder should also be able to demonstrate:

  • Management, planning and implementation skills, as well as a creative and effective approach to problem solving.
  • Highly developed written and oral communications skills are essential, as is the ability to influence and persuade internally and in a highly competitive - and potentially hostile - external environment.
