Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Obstetrician to join its dynamic and ambitious team. If you hold a certificate of completion of specialist O&G training and have completed subspecialty training in Fetal Medicine, then we would love to hear from you

The successful candidate will join a large cohesive team of 24 Consultants, providing general and specialised obstetrics care to the population of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas.

This post will be based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.

The Consultant clinical duties:

The job plan will initially be based on 10 programmed activities.

The direct clinical care will include fetal medicine scanning clinics, elective caesarean section lists, general antenatal clinic and ward cover. Each consultant also participates in the Hot Week rota on average 5 times a year when normal daytime elective activity is cancelled to allow for covering the Labour Ward.

On call requirements

The post holder will be required to participate in the obstetric on call rota including resident on call until 10pm week days and six hours resident on Saturdays and Sundays.

About us

Our maternity service has been graded “GOOD” by the Care Quality Commission in February 2024.

The Obstetrics and Gynaecological Department is part of the Women and Children’s Clinical Service Centre and is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The maternity service has 88 beds and will be responsible for approximately 6000 deliveries in 2024. There are four Midwife led birth centres in the district, one of which is co-located with the Consultant Unit. We have close links with the regional Fetal Medicine Centre in Southampton.

Additionally the Gynaecology Department sees approximately 6500 new patients per year and performs over 3000 elective procedures. There is a 12 bed Gynaecological Inpatient Unit, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Gynae Emergency Assessment Unit. We share day unit facilities with other specialities. There is a sub speciality units of Gynaecological Oncology and Urogynaecology, and accredited Colposcopy and Endometriosis centres.

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • MRCOG or equivalent approved by PMETB
  • Completion of RCOG ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent
  • Accredited subspecialist in Fetomaternal Medicine (or equivalent)

Clinical Experience

  • Clinical training and experience in ante natal and intra partum obstetrics equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
  • Ability to offer acute care as the Obstetric consultant alongside a Level 3 Neonatal Unit
  • Demonstrable team working skills
  • Experience working in tertiary fetal medicine unit

Clinical Skills

  • Ability to undertake fetal medicine scans
  • Knowledge, Clinical and Technical skills to provide a Consultant Service in obstetrics
  • Certification in managing obstetric emergencies on labour ward


Knowledge

  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of a safe service
  • Commitment to accept a share of management in the Department
  • Engagement in resource management
  • Evidence of achieving change from effective clinical audit.
  • Experience of developing clinical pathways, guidelines and policies
  • Experience and training in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
  • Training in basic research technique and evaluation
  • Ability to critically review research
