As a Prison Healthcare Nurse, you'll play a crucial role in providing primary care, mental health support, and specialised services such as substance misuse or learning disability care within a unique and diverse prison environment. Your work will make a significant difference to the lives of individuals who have typically experienced health inequalities.
*Your responsibilities will cover a wide range of nurse-led services, including health assessments, mental health care, managing minor injuries and illnesses, end-of-life/palliative care, substance misuse interventions, emergency and unscheduled care, managing long-term conditions, nurse consultation clinics, and safeguarding.
*Working in a prison setting offers a unique opportunity to deliver compassionate care to patients from diverse cultural backgrounds with complex health needs. To qualify as a Prison Healthcare Nurse, you need to be a registered nurse with current UK registration from the NMC. No specific qualification is mandated for this role, enabling nurses with backgrounds in general adult services, mental health, substance misuse, or learning disability to contribute their expertise.
*Conflict management skills and understanding of the criminal justice system are valuable assets.
*5 hours per week, you'll be paid on the Agenda for Change (AFC) pay system, starting typically at band 5. Private providers follow an equivalent system. Benefits include access to a generous pension scheme, health service discounts, and at least 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays.
*Training and Development:*
Comprehensive training on prison-related aspects and healthcare manager leadership is provided. Various routes for career development, including opportunities in management, education, and research, are available. Specialising in areas like mental health or substance misuse is encouraged.
