Your new role

National Highways Digital Services are embarking on a multi-million pound transformation programme that will enable us to transform the way it operates by delivering digital, data and technology services for the operational technology estate that supports the national road traffic system. 

To ensure we have the right capability and capacity, we are recruiting for a Lead Service Manager to join the Service Operations team in the operational technology (OT) space. The team provide effective, efficient delivery and support of digital services by defining, planning, leading and delivering the IT and OT operations support strategy across the business in line with the overall Delivery Plan for National Highways.

As our new Lead Service Manager, you will be part of the Operational Technology leadership team providing leadership across the group to identify and implement opportunities for the enhancement and innovation of operational technology. You will help shape and deliver our business change, ensuring National Highways fulfils its traffic management goals and objectives.

We are a flexible working organisation and are pleased to offer the above role as a hybrid role. There is an expectation that you would work from one of our National Highways offices for 40% of your time. Travel to The Cube Birmingham and other sites will be required as and when needed.

This is a part time role offering 18.5 hours per week with flexible hours. We are offering 4 working patterns that you can choose from:

Monday-Friday half days
Monday, Tuesday, and half day Wednesday
Thursday, Friday, and half day Wednesday
Monday and Friday, plus any other half day in the week

What you’ll be leading on

  • Contributing to the Operational Technology management team and deputising for direct line manager when requested.
  • Delivering, managing, maintaining and operational technology solutions on the strategic road network. Identification, investigation and implementation of new functionality and technical innovation. Driving continuous improvement in services, maximising the benefits of the service to both National Highways and the road user.
  • Providing guidance and support to other parts of the business, including Major Projects and Operations, reviewing and challenging project proposals at various stage gates.
  • Delivery of projects and programmes, change and risk management, specifically the impact on the division in terms of finance and resources.
  • Ensuring that financial adherence and governance is followed. Ensure compliance with contractual delivery mechanisms and targets which protect the organisation’s assets, deliver value for money and identify efficiency savings. 

To be successful you’ll need 

  • Experience of leading teams in a complex commercial, contractual and service management environment and managing and supporting projects. 
  • Strong experience with supplier and contract management able to improve supplier delivery through engagement and contact knowledge. 
  • Understanding of operational technology design and operation, including policy, legislative and regulatory. May have worked in a similar business, e.g. utilities environment, large service integrator, the emergency services or other mission critical environments and is able to demonstrate exposure to the range of technologies deployed in operational technology environments. 
  • Able to analyse process, identify opportunities and implement improvements to optimise process, and able to evaluate and establish requirements for the implementation of changes by setting policy and standards.
  • Degree qualification or significant demonstrable experience in a relevant technical area: electrical engineering, telecommunications, traffic technology, computer systems or related technologies.

  • Telecommunications Systems
