The post of Consultant Psychiatrist in HIV is a part-time outpatient role, ideally done over one day per week. The current post holder works on a Friday, based within the Lawson HIV unit, but there is room to negotiate a different day if needed. The main responsibilities of this post are to offer assessment and brief interventions to patients who have mental health disorders related to their HIV diagnosis, and to liaise and consult with referrers (predominantly the HIV clinical team) regarding the mental health support needs and provision of patients attending the Lawson Unit. The post holder will contribute to care planning, risk management, and treatment of patients alongside the wider HIV mental health team.
There is also scope for co-working with other psychiatric and mental health services within Sussex Partnership to support patients with complex difficulties. This includes working with the ATS to support staff in caring for patients living with HIV who may also have severe and enduring or complex mental health presentations. The post holder may also have the opportunity to input into the strategic development of mental health support for HIV patients and to collaborate with the HIV mental health team psychologists in doing so. The HIV mental health team and the post holder have the opportunity to input into initiatives supporting these goals.
